← Race to the Stones

This was my first ultra and first time running farther than a marathon. I had done Race to the King the year before over two days mainly walking and loved the event so wanted to do another Threshold race.

Threshold really know what they are doing when it comes to putting on a race. Everything is well organized and you are well taken care of. The atmosphere is what I love the best, the marshals and check point crew are so friendly and motivating as well as all the people along the route, it doesn't matter how fast or slow you are moving. Everything happens seamlessly and you really don't have to think much at all, a benefit as newbie at these distances.

I would say the route is not as scenic as Race to the King but it is also less hilly- from what my legs remember. The terrain was pretty easy to run on in most places though I did see a couple people slip and fall, mostly in the wooded parts near the start. I did not mind the run out to the stones and back to the finish though others I know have not enjoyed it. I finished just after dark and the field at the end was pretty treacherous but does not last for long. In fact the finish was much better than I had come to believe after reading other reports. There was a good atmosphere, photographers, plenty of people cheering runners on as well as a good selection of food.

Having the start in waves must have fixed the problems of congestion on the course as I experienced only slight congestion going through the field of dreams and none at any gates.

Coming from London by public transport was easy. I stayed in High Wycombe Friday night and found a ride to the start through the Threshold Facebook group. Otherwise a can would have been easy. I stayed in Avebury after the race and it was an easy bus then train back to London. Book accommodation early though!
