Some good and some bad which I am sure can be improved on quite easily. The swim was pretty bad with a lot of reeds and the lake too shallow in many places. I assume the winding route was created to try and avoid the worst of the reeds, but they were still an issue, and the overly intricate route caused a lot of congestion at the turns. The exit was also a little dangerous with the ramp far too high in the water causing many to smash their shins or stumble up. The swim needs a complete rethink, even if it means moving to the other lake. The ride was great with no complaints. It was a lovely course and road conditions were very good compared to others I've raced. No suggested changes to the route. The run route was even worse than the swim. As much as it was a beautiful location, the actual terrain and routing of the run was one of the worst I've done. The ground was too rough and loose, there were too many turns, too many hills on bad ground, and the hills were too early in the route after coming off of the bike. One simple fix would be to explicitly classify it as a trail run, but a complete rethink of the run would be better, even if it involved more laps. I thought the transitions were fine, even with the swim to ride being quite far. It didn't really bother me and it was safe ground to run on in a wetsuit. The facilities and stations were good, maybe could do with some toilets on the ride, and possibly better spacing out of the stations on the run, but on they whole they were good. The marshals were great and very supportive. The event was well run and the execution was good. The biggest limiting factor for me running a Castle Series event again in the future would be the cost. It isn't that the cost is prohibitive, it's just that the value doesn't justify it. It is more expensive than most, additional charges for things like camping is well above average price, and there was very little in added value compared to other events I've attended. I don't mind paying more for better events, but unfortunately I just didn't see the extra value.
