My first time at the Belvoir and first time doing a trail run at backend of middle distance (MD) race. Overall, I enjoyed the day of racing. Although the MD is small in numbers the various other events held at the same time adds to the race day numbers and the enjoyment (although they also add to safety issues too – more later). The estate 4 lap pond swim is challenging due to the low depth, weed, multiple turns and the green coloured buoys that blend into the trees and shadows (couldn’t see 3 of the 5). If the competitor numbers were larger the multi lap would have been very difficult. I have raced across the world since starting tris over 40 years ago and I'd have to say the road surface, in parts, was challenging, had a couple of right hand, cross traffic, turns and isn’t closed to traffic impacting the safety factor. There were volunteers on the corners however they were very hard to hear. There were enough aid stations (AS), with 2 on the multi-lap course, however the first one only had 1 volunteer and the second 2. Having been an event organiser, I know it’s hard to find volunteers however none of the 3 knew how to safely and effectively hold a full 750ml water bottle for easy ‘grab’ (I’d suggest small bottles or don’t fill up fully). At the 2nd AS the volunteers stood too close together and I missed both opportunities to grab water. Also, directly after the 2nd AS there was a very rough patch of road which made grabbing anything problematic (need to consider an alternative location). Lastly, there is a dangerous bottleneck on the second loop as Gauntlet and other event competitors exit onto the bike course from T2. Post event my wife mentioned volunteers were telling those exiting T1 to “keep to the right” unfortunately rather than that, when I went through, they were over the entire road rather than ‘keeping to the left’ which is the road rules! Also, just before this, there are run competitors that come off a field across the road heading towards run race finish field which was a safety hazard too (some runners simply didn’t look before crossing). Not too much to say about the run however if it was wet, you’d need trail shoes. There are varied surfaces from tarmac, rough gravel, spongey wood chips, rutted grass fields, sand, and some very narrow paths. I do have an issue with wrong timing but I'll follow that up separately. THE number one plus for me was someone had the great idea to provide Gauntlet competitors with a free Mexican meal, of your choice, at one of the food trucks. My biggest event dislike when doing half or full distances races is the lack of meaningful post-race nutrition. A large chicken burrito, with rice, avocado, cheese and sauces was AWESOME! All the best for 2027.

Hi Peter, thank you for taking the time to leave such a comprehensive review and for sharing your experience. We're pleased to hear you enjoyed your first visit to Belvoir and that the overall race day atmosphere, particularly the post-race meal, made such a positive impression. It's great to know the complimentary meal for Gauntlet competitors was so well received. We also really appreciate the detailed feedback you've provided. Your comments on the swim course, bike route, aid stations, shared course sections and competitor flow are all valuable, and we'll ensure they're included in our post-event debrief with the Race Director and operations team. Feedback from experienced athletes and organisers is incredibly helpful as we review each event and look for ways to improve both the participant experience and course safety. We're sorry to hear you've experienced an issue with your timing results, if you haven't already, please email https://www.stuweb.co.uk/contact how are the timing company we use. Thank you again for your constructive feedback, and we hope to welcome you back to another Castle Race Series event in the future.

Hi Euan. Thank you for taking the time to leave your feedback. We're pleased to hear you found our staff friendly and appreciate you sharing your thoughts on the course. We understand your comments about the swim. The multi-lap format is a result of the lake layout, as the further out you go, the shallower the water becomes. For participant safety, we have to design the course to remain within the deeper sections of the lake, which means an out-and-back route isn't possible at this venue. We appreciate your feedback regarding congestion, and it's something we continue to review when planning the swim format. Thank you as well for your comments about the run from transition with the bike. We'll pass your suggestion about additional matting or carpeting over the rougher ground to our Race Director as part of our post-event review. We appreciate you taking the time to share your experience, and we hope to welcome you back to another Castle Race Series event soon.

Be aware that the lake water is dirty and slimy and there's some weed to swim through. Very enjoyable none the less.

Hi Liz, thank you for taking the time to leave a review. We're pleased to hear you enjoyed the event overall. As a natural open-water venue, the lake conditions can vary throughout the season, and factors such as temperature, weather and natural vegetation all play a part. We continually monitor the water quality and carry out testing ahead of the event to ensure it meets the required standards for racing. We appreciate your feedback and hope to welcome you back to another Castle Race Series event soon.

The Gauntlet at Belvoir Castle is an excellent event and so well run by Castle Series. The course is well marshalled and signposted. There are an adequate number of feed stations. The swim is easy to navigate and I quite like the fact that each buoy is only 100-150 metres away as it helps to break up the swim. The bike is fast and flat and the road surface is generally very good (for the UK). The run is scenic (and brutal - but that is not a criticism). The post-race facilities are great and also really good for spectators during the racing. I love the fact that there are so many events going on all day for all ages and abilities. One recommendation is that on the bike feed stations there are rubbish collection bins about 250m further up the road. Many competitors will use refillable bottles on their bike set up, and disposal of the bottles you hand out is difficult without this facility. I'll be back next year :)

Hi Mike, thank you for taking the time to leave such a detailed review. We're really pleased to hear you enjoyed the Gauntlet at Belvoir and that you found the course, feed stations and event organisation to be of such a high standard. Thank you as well for your suggestion about providing bottle disposal points beyond the bike feed stations. That's a really helpful idea, particularly for athletes using refillable bottles, and we'll make sure it's included in our post-event review. We're delighted to hear you'll be back next year, and we look forward to welcoming you back to Belvoir!

My second time doing a Castle Race event, and first time at Belvoir. Excellent organisation and friendly, knowledgeable staff throughout. Having the briefing videos and the pre-race briefing on the day is a great help in imparting the sense that you know what you're doing in the excitement of the race. It's a long old run from the swim up to transition, but the swim area is well organised, with enough space for supporters to stand and watch. A bit congested on the start line, especially with swimmers from previous waves still on the course, but I was pleasantly surprised by how quickly I was able to settle into it after the first minute or so. The officials in transition were keeping a close eye on everyone, and doing it in a very friendly manner, which really added to the fun atmosphere of the day. Nice bike course through some very pretty villages. A challenging but very picturesque run route through the castle grounds, with hills and uneven terrain, which suited me, but might come as a shock to competitors who'd only trained on paved surfaces. The absolute best portable toilets I have seen anywhere; they were as clean and well-stocked on Sunday at 3:00 as they were on Saturday at 11:00. Which makes a huge difference to enabling you to relax and enjoy the event. Especially when you've brought your family to support and you know they'll be hanging around the event village all weekend. And talking of super supporters, please would you expand your merchandise range to include something to celebrate the drivers, mechanics, ticket printers, moral supporters, bag carriers, food finders, kit organisers, giver-uppers of their weekends who come to cheer us on. I thought about trying to blag a crew T-shirt for my husband, but he wouldn't have been so pleased if he'd been mistaken for a genuine official!

I dont do loads of triathlons as more of a trail runner so I always try to fit a Castle race into my calendar! The bike & run routes are stunning and although there are some cheeky hills on run, the courses suit all abilities. The swim isnt the clearest but undersrand its due to depth of lake & recent heat waves. You're organisers and marshalls are always so supportive, helpful & happy! Shame more events dont follow suit!! Only negative was goody bag! Its nice not to get lots of junk but just a tshirt for half iron is a bit tight. Maybe twist sponsers arms for samples or one of your water bottles??? Thanks again & might see you in ireland or france nxt year!!

Absolutely Brilliant event. This event has to be up there as one of the best around. The pre race communications, the on day registration, the courses, the signage, the amenities, the post race presentations just fantastic. Massive shout out to all of the Marshalls and helpers - best I've ever encountered in my 10 years of participating in Triathlons. Super helpful, always encouraging, nothing was too much trouble, and to think some of the marshalls on the bike course will have been out for 4-6 hours.. simply amazing - Thankyou!

As always a great Castle Race Series events. This is one of my favourite triathlon routes of the series. As someone who is not a fan of the swim, the swim course was not nearly as weedy as some, which made it much more enjoyable. Cycle and run are great routes and well supported and marshalled. They had increased aid stations on the run from the last time, which was needed, so thank you for taking that on board. I can honestly say I don’t know how you could improve the event, except for having showers for competitors. Those with a long drive home would I’m sure appreciate a quick shower.
