← Timothy James & Partners London 10 Mile

This was the inaugural London 10 mile run in Richmond Park and the organisers picked a perfect day as the weather was warm with a cooling breeze - great for an early summer event.  My thoughts and feedback on the run are as follows:

+ve

  • Wonderful location, Richmond Park without the cars is heaven for runners
  • The course was tough and hilly and not for the faint hearted but if you're looking for a challenge then you're in for a treat
  • I booked late but there was no drama arriving early to pick up my race pack on the day - no muss no fuss, and thankfully no massive queues
  • I'm fortunate to live close by and was able to cycle to the park and the secure parking zone worked really well

-ve

  • The start time seemed to keep getting pushed back, another 2 minutes, then another 2 minutes, then a guest interview, then a Mexican wave - after standing couped up in a starting pen for longer then was comfortable, it was not the best start to the run
  • The water stations were very small and not overly manned, and my biggest gripe is the use of open cups rather than either sports cap water bottles or even better the water bags that many runs have adopted
  • The cost was expensive for a half marathon, the one saving grace may be the free photos which are promised early next week. Even so, the promise about goody bags seemed a little overstated as the contents look pretty standard and there was a distinct lack of fruit
  • Finally, a gripe for many runners (and potentially a contributory factor in the race delay), toilet queues suggests that perhaps there were not enough and the organisers might rethink those numbers next year.

Overall, it was a very good event and I would run it again but there are a few things that would make the London 10 miler a staple in the running calendar.
