← Eyam Half Marathon

Eyam is a historically interesting place; in short during the plague (spread by rats) Eyam Village had the plague but the neighbouring villages did not. A decision was taken that Eyam would cut itself off from the rest of the world to contain the plague so that the other villages would not be infected. It resulted in potentially more deaths in the village itself as people could not get away, but it prevented a much more serious spread of the disease.

Anyway, this race (which due to a landslide hasn't been run since 2015) is a locally arranged event; it's all done by the village who fully support the run which, raises money for local charities. It's tough; the first hill takes the first 2.5 miles of the course before 7ish miles of steady downhill. Then you turn a sharp bend onto a minor road, that does 2 more very steep miles. UP! The last section then drops down the hill you started going up at the beginning of the race.

I'd certainly do it again. But until the road is cleared, sadly the future of this race is in doubt.

We’ve overcome a few land slips since 2015 and we’re glad to bring the race back in 2021 - Eyam Half Marathon
