← Sandman Triathlon

I got lucky with this last year and got to race on a day that it didn't rain in Wales. The weather was perfect, which made a big difference to the enjoyment of the race.

It was generally very well organised but you need to leave plenty of time if you're driving. There was a queue for the car parking that delayed the start. Lots of flustered athletes running into transition with not much time to set up. Oh and make sure you have the right change for the car park marshall - it speeds the process up.

I did the "full" Sandman 1000/60/10

Once you're racked and ready you walk down the beach to the swim start  It's a running start and you swim out 50m and then back to transition.

Bike ride is great, one cat 5 climb and loads of locals out cheering you on.

Run is awesome - through Newborough Forest, beautiful scenery. There is a steep sand dune about 1k from the end and the last 600/700m to the finish are along the beach.

Marshalls were great - I've given them a score of 3/5 though because myself and the friend I raced with were able to take our bikes out of transition at the end without our numbers being checked - I did 'phone  organisers - AAH- the day after to complain and they promised that it wouldn't happen again. A shame because otherwise organisation was excellent.

I think you would be hard pushed to beat this race for the beauty of the course - in the UK anyway. A good tough race and worth doing, I got the impression when I raced that a lot of the competitors were stepping down from IM or 70.3 rather than steppping up from Olympic. Apparently it always attracts a strong field.

Oh btw if you want a t-shirt then pre-order they didn't have much stock on the day.
