I'm always a little wary of May races as I run best when it's cooler, but I thought it would be good prep for Liverpool Marathon in two weeks. The race village was really good with lots of stalls and activities, though I think they could have done with a few more loos. I hit them early so I was OK but there were pretty big queues later on.
Having Colin Jackson and Dina Asher-Smith there was amazing.
The route is mostly flat but with a testing hill at mile 8 and then an upward slope before the end. Scenically it's a lot of leafy lanes, so pleasant enough but not massively interesting. You don't really see much of Gatwick due to the trees, but you can certainly hear the planes.
Overall I thought it was excellent - lots of marshalling and adequate water stations. Some support on the way around but as it's rural, there were long stretches without much going on.
My only quibble was that the finish was a bit of an anticlimax. You turn off the main road and go through a small inflatable arch and er, that's it. I wasn't even sure it was the finish until I noticed the people in front of me had stopped. A bit strange, really!
