← Boston UK Marathon and Half

This was my 2nd attempt at this race, having previously run it in 2017. Race had marathon, half marathon and fun run options - I did the Marathon. Race numbers were posted out. Entry fee was excellent value and there a good pre-race atmosphere. Baggage deposit/collection was quick & easy. Race started in the centre of Boston but quickly went through into rural country lanes. Nature of the course meant there was very little crowd support but the enthusiastic marshals at the regular water stations were very encouraging. Course was the flattest marathon I have ever done (so much flatter than Manchester, Edinburgh ect). On this particular day, the unrelenting headwind was a big problem. The course was mentally quite tough as there was no change to the scenery or elevation. Finish line was back in the centre of Boston. Finishers received a decent medal, nice tech shirt and goodie bag containing bits to eat and water. There was also a post-race massage in return for a donation to charity. In summary - Pros: This clearly doesn't have the razzmatazz of it's more illustrious American namesake but what you do get is a very cheap entry fee (£28), the flattest marathon in the UK, medal, tech shirt, goodie bag, friendly marshals, nice atmosphere and a good honest race. Cons: Many parts of the course looked the same so it was mentally tough. Flat course was welcome but it meant no variation. It was quite a lonely race but some people prefer this to the hustle-bustle of the big races. ** The half and full marathon routes went their separate ways at around 4 miles. Better signage or placing a marshal at that position is needed because I know of a couple of runners who went the wrong way. Hopefully that will be improved for next year’s race. Overall, it was a great event and one I would certainly recommend. £28 entry fee is a real bargain. Massive thanks to the wonderful marshals and volunteers for an amazing job.

Thank you for your amazing review Colin. We have addressed the marshal numbers and signage at the crucial point where the two races split . All we need now is good weather for 2020. Hope to see you back soon. - Boston Marathon Association
