← Glorious Gargrave - Leeds Liverpool Canal

Wow! What an amazing place to run. Gargrave in the Yorkshire Dales is breathtaking.

Glorious Gargrave had a variation of distances from 5k to Ultra. I was taking part in the marathon.

Race numbers were collection on the day only. Registration was at a pub/hotel next to start line & straight forward. There was a nice atmosphere pre race.

After a slight delay to the start runners set off in waves, depending on what distance they were competing in.

The Full Marathon was a long out and back which took us to 20 miles & a shorter out and back the other way to take us to 26.2 miles.

Ran entirely on canal tow path through amazing scenery. The Yorkshire Dales are stunning. I wanted to stop & take photographs. It was especially nice because it was a very hot & sunny day.

These paths are pretty flat for the first 20 miles, apart from a set of steps that you negotiate twice. The final 6 miles involves a couple of little bumps, nothing major but on tired legs they feel like mountains! Whilst most of the paths are flat, many are bumpy so caution is advised to avoid tripping up. Also there are a couple of quiet roads to cross. With there also being members of the general public on the course the use of iPods is rightfully discouraged.

Water stations were every few miles & were vital in the stifling heat. Massive thanks to the wonderful people who give us their day to man these feed stations. They are fantastic!

Thanks also to the organisers for looking after runners who had hit trouble in the heat. I know a few people were in a bad way but IGUN always make safety a priority.

Finishers were rewarded with a lovely solid medal, chocolate, beer/lager & a feast of home baked cakes. If that wasn’t enough there was a free barbecue serving burger, hot dogs, roast potatoes, etc. There was even an option for vegans too.

This race is highly recommended.

IN SUMMARY...
