← Thoresby Leaf Kick

There is a split point where people doing a 10 mile course have to turn left to redo part of the course. On the second time round people were still being directed that way so some did 13 miles (they did warn this in the briefing though) - fortunately a runner I'd been following ignored them and I followed him, so I did the correct distance. I think most people probably went the correct way.

From the sounds of it there was a sign there, but it sounds like the marshal directing people was standing in front of it when I passed.

At the finish they then managed to give me a 10K medal for the 10 mile race, and I didn't realise they'd done this until I got home! Apparently at some point after I'd finished there were two queues so no further mistakes were made, but when I finished there was one queue.

Anyway, onto the course - it's a good course, but tricky in places where holes have been filled in with very large pebles. You have to be REALLY careful running over those. In the briefing they were described as boulders and they really weren't kidding.

A couple of the hills were hard work on tired legs (third race in three weeks), but at least on the second time doing the hills I knew how long I'd got until they'd be over so could motivate myself to keep going.

This IS a trail race, and there will be canicross runners too so bear that in mind. We'd had a fair bit of rain over the past week so some bits were muddy and slippy, but could mostly be avoided by a bit of extra weaving.

Support on this race is entirely in the last mile around the Thoresby estate - this is to be expected, but the marshals are great at supporting on the route anyway. I also got to see a couple of friends there spectating which was nice!

Now I know the course I think I'd be fine with the inner loop section with or without the sign. The organisers have since contacted me to sort out the medal issue, so it's really good they're able to sort out issues quickly :)

Hi David. Your 10mile medal is in the post today - sorry about that. We had 3 distances & each had a separate ribbon! There wasn't a specific queue for any medal though. We had a few marshals handing medals out & occasionally mistakes happen although we colour the ribbons the same as your race number to try to help marshals & avoid errors. There were plenty of signs for the 10mile turn but runners should only loop once as per race info, maps & pre race briefings. To remove any errors next year; After the tail runner passes this point, all turn signs will be removed & the path will be taped off. There were only 4 that turned wrong out of over 300 but that is 4 too many. See you at The Longhorn :-) Amanda - SBR Events
