← Mumbles Triathlon

Final Triathlon of the year and in October so i guess we shouldnt expect the weather. Two lovely days sandwiched the terrible weather on race day.

Registration and Logistics are pretty good, you can collect your race pack on the Friday if you are local or spend the night before the race down in the Mumbles. Racking was split and the Middle Distance were separated from the Sprints, gave us lots of room which was nice.

As stated the weather was terrible on race morning and pretty cold. Race brief was down at the race start/finish so you did get cold before the race. Swim course was shortened so not 100% clear where to go though im never 1st so easy to follow. No chance to get in the water to get used to the cold temperature so I knew if would be as shock when the gun went.

2 Lap swim course and loads of paddle boarders so very safe swim course and gave you a chanel to follow/swim down. Probably really good for weakeer swimmers who could pause at a board then go again. Aussie Exit then back in for the midle distance.

Transition was straight forward and sign posted for both T1 & T2 and marshalled reasonably well so you knew where to go.

The bike was onto open roads and the Mumbles is pretty busy so you have to be careful until you turn up towards the Gower. I found lots of traffic on the road so not the best to get your head down & go for it especially on the main road.

Torq feed station which i didnt use as im self sufficiant on a middle distance but Torq is good stuff.

The run back into transition was very busy with traffic so you had to take it easy. But a good honest bike course which would have been good to look at if the weather wasnt so poor. Certainly not a drafters course which was good.

The run was 4 laps of 5km. The same as the Sprint distance and very flat along the sea front so good for pacing, 1 feed station at the second turn point (5km). The run course was not closed so you had to dodge walkers along the route which was not ideal and the only point it was blocked was when i turned to go into the finish section so had to skip under the tape to get back on course.

It was the same swim & run course as the Sprint with a longer loop on the bike. I know we pay more for middle distance races and at about £100 it is one of the cheaper ones but apart from the Torq feed station i dont see where the extra cash went as both races got a medal.

Decent race though and the course is good witha tough swim & bike setting it up for a fast run if you havnt blown everything on the bike. I would recommend this race even on the horrible day we had.
