← Shine Night Walk - London

I really don't like to post a negative review, given that this event is generally well regarded, but I'm sorry to say I just didn't enjoy it overall.

The entry process is fine. The start was well signed and easy enough to get to from Canada Water station.

The volunteers were all lovely. On arrival I got the flashy race bracelet, a map and a bottle of water but not a foil blanket, which would have been quite handy later on.

I did the full marathon in the early wave at 9.20 but didn't cross the start line til nearer to 9.50pm. The first mile or so is well lit and due to the crowd and congestion there's a good atmosphere. Rock Choir at the bandstand was a nice way to start.

After that, there's not a lot going on along the course. There are a couple of volunteers at many of the mile markers and at the checkpoints.

An official photo was taken of me at the start line and again at the finish but there are no other photographers along the course.

The route had so much potential, but was heavily residential. Landmarks such as Kings Cross station were marked on the map but the route ends up going around the station rather than along Euston Road, so you only see the back of it. This was a real shame as it's beautiful.

Due to the overnight nature of the event, crowd support is pretty much non existent. You are just doing a long ass walk through London at night, so  in this respect you're getting what you pay for!

Seeing everyone's rave reviews of Shine on the event Facebook page may have made me build it up in my mind so I guess I was expecting more fun stuff happening along the way and an amazing sense achievement when I finally reached the finish. In all honesty, instead I've just come away feeling that whilst it was a tough walk for a good cause, it was pretty boring so I don't think I'd do it again.

Sorry!
