← The Harry Hawkes Summer Raceday

I heard about this event after a comment I'd made about not enjoying the hills in Richmond Park when recently running the London 10 Miler there last month, prompted the race organisers to suggest the Harry Hawkes 10 as a flatter course. I duly signed up and enjoyed the experience. Overall, it was a good event and I'd certainly do it again. My thoughts and feedback is as follows:

+ve

  • The event cost £25 which if you include the decent medal and organisation, represents reasonable value for money when some half-marathons are charge £50+
  • The number pick-up was very straightforward and hassle free which was just as well as I arrived a little later than expected
  • The atmosphere was very friendly and the BBQ and drinks on the cricket pitch afterwards made it all very relaxed and enjoyable

  • The course was a bit mixed and having ran the Kingston 20 mile Breakfast Run a few months ago made it feel very familiar for those stretches along the river to Kingston and back up to Hampton Court. Although there were parts of the course that took in some tracks through the woods it would have been good to have had more of it off-road
  • A minor point on communication, when I registered and paid I didn't get an email directing me to the site to confirm the finer details. Interestingly when I clicked through via Twitter it did show that I was registered but didn't link through to the actual race website. So my advise is go straight to the website and you'll see everything you need there
  • The water stations where not as well set up at the intervals I'd have expected which did throw me a little as it was quite warm
