.....Just one of the motivational signs spotted at Giants Head Marathon by White Star Running.

08:30am, Saturday 24 June and the 5th edition of the Giants Head Marathon is started by the sound of bells pealing at the church of Sydling Saint Nicholas. This tiny village in the shadow of the Cerne Giant (https://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/cerne-giant) once again played host to what is the hilliest race on the White Star Running (WSR) calendar. With just over 3000ft of climbing across 26 miles this was far from a flat route. Consisting of mixed terrain: hard packed trail, grassy paths, corn fields, steep climbs and quad squealing descents this route around Dorset has it all.

A slightly re-routed version from previous years due to access issues, once again WSR pulled a blinder to make an awesome route with some fantastic views. Race registration was slick and easy. Aid stations a plenty, spaced every few miles with an array of treats and drinks. At around 20 miles The 'Lovestation', a highlight of WSR races, was as a welcome sight. Stocking the usual fayre you'd expect at any well supplied drinks station but with the addition of cider, vodka and can-can girls dishing out the hugs and moral support to the weary runners.

The route was well signed, including the usual motivation signs "hurry up FFS" that are a trade mark of the WSR races.

A haul of goodies were provided to all finishers including a t-shirt, buff and medal with a spinning willy (has to be seen to be believed).

Giants Head is also famous for its unbelievable Mr Whippy ice creams. The recovery food of champions these ice creams, teetering on top of standard cones are the biggest ice creams ever witnessed. A hog roast is on hand for anyone who wants a savoury option whilst lounging around on the village green watching the finishers come home.

With some smaller races taking part on the Sunday, camping, dancing and ample car parking this race has everything to make for an fun filled weekend. If you have never run this sold out race i suggest you keep an eye out for registration opening and make this part of your race calendar.
