← Endure24 - Reading

The organisers of Endure 24 describe their event as a unique running experience. Lots of similar races/weekend events seem to have sprung up recently so that's not quite true. However, this is a special running experience with a party atmosphere to match.

I competed in the team relay but solo and pairs categories run at the same time giving us mere mortals the chance to rub shoulders with true ultra runners. Last I heard, still with a couple of hours to go, ten runners had completed over 100 miles. Everyone, regardless of ability, is welcomed and suppprted in the same way though and there is something of the true spirit of running in that which I love!

The course is comprised of five mile laps through Wasing Park - trail and undulating (at times steep) but beautiful and interesting enough not to mind the repetition with some great technical sections. One water station is located just after half way and the VDub bar keeps tunes and energy drinks flowing until late Saturday night. There is also 24 hour Marshall support meaning that there is always a cheery voice to encourage you, even in the dead of night.

One other thing to mention is the facilities. Camping is open from the Friday and, from this year, parking is kept separate (although you do still get service vehicles travelling through site). I've heard various moans about the facilities - people getting dodgy stomachs, car park release being chaotic etc. I can only say what I have seen which is this: the facilities are spot on! I have never seen portaloos cleaned and paper replenished so regularly, on site catering is immense and decent value, there are ample fresh water supplies throughout and it took me a grand total of two minutes from getting in the car to being off site.

In summary, brilliantly organised, great atmosphere and cracking running. This was my second year at Endure and I'll be back again. I figure any event that can make you feel ok about getting up at 1:15am to run around a forest in the pouring rain must be ok!! Do it, you will not regret it!
