← Brighton Marathon

I've ran Brighton a few times. I will do it again and already entered next year as it's close enough to be convenient. However I must admit I'm not a massive fan.

I will start with the positives. It has good local support for the majority of the route, it has relatively good PB potential, and running alone the seafront is lovely. However I don't have a lot more positives to add.

To start it's bloody expensive. It's not so bad if you enter early, but pretty quickly it becomes a very expensive marathon. The expo seems to be getting smaller and more disappointing every year. The amount of stalls this year could have fit in Londons registration area #perspective.

Registration was painfully long. First a massive queue to get into the expo then huge queue for race numbers. This year they let you select, so when I got close the fastest area I qualify for was empty, but been waiting an hour beforehand to get to this stage, this could and needs to be organised better.

On the whole the course was good. I decided to start in mass section with friends rather than the white start I usually qualify for. This meant I missed the downhill start. The ground was terrible and I had huge lumps of mu stuck to my trainers that I had to stamp off for the first few miles, this was far from ideal. The route goes up and down the seafront and is relatively flat with good support. Cups of water were at the aid stations, very disappointing owing to the cost of entry. A lot of people don't like the residential section where it gets quiet, but I don't mind too much. But I do hate the power station at about 23. It stinks and it brings back memories of years before where I hit the wall here.

I will go back, but won't enter late, if I don't enter at the expo or soon after I am  unlikely to pay the increased price for this race.
