← Stroud Half Marathon

Returning home to my childhood hometown, I was looking forward to participating in this relatively small local race (1600 runners).

The registration and pre race organisation was good. Numbers were posted out in advance and social media and website coverage was quick and accurate.

On the day, the race started well and the local support was brilliant considering the size of the local towns. However, 2 miles in, I was realising that the 'road closures' and marshals were not able to stop a busy car traffic. Cars on both sides of the roads were darting in and out of runners, forcing some in to grassy verges. Marshals attempted to slow traffic down but to no avail. At one point I chose to run into the road to stop a car going the wrong way around a roundabout to save himself valuable seconds on his clearly very important journey.

Into whitminster, traffic cones along the cycle track divided runners from the traffic however again cars meandered between sections with little consideration to runners safety. The same story continued back along Ebley road back to the finish.

Water stations were basic- plastic cups were not practical however I'm sure kept the cost down

This is a superbly organised and supported race for this scale. However, the poor traffic management was a real concern which I believe will end in accident or tragedy if not changed.

Ps: medal and technical tshirt are good quality also.
