Been a long wait to get to the start line with the delays from the pandemic but wow it was worth the wait. I live in the midlands but grew up around Eastbourne so the moment I saw a hometown half iron race launched, I had to be there. Aside from excellent value for money, just so many positives!
Swim
A jump off the end of the pier at high tide and a circuit around and under the pier before hitting the beach along the coast. Little bit of current to navigate which made things interesting but it was so much fun.
Bike
If you're super strong on the bike, this is a very fast course. Quick A roads, lots of rollers and countryside and the last 10 miles or so was beautiful. Two climbs to get through at the end, but very manageable. The climb up from Birling Gap to Beachy Head took my breath away. So, so stunning with the ocean view and Seven Sisters behind you before a fast descent down back to transition on the promenade.
Run
A flat quick course by the ocean, with five aid stops per lap and beachy head as the backdrop. It was unbelievably hot, 29 degrees, and many of us suffered. You just have to accept the performance drop in those circumstances, but there was plenty of coke, water, electrolytes, gels etc to go around, and valued the water spray at each end of the course too! Also, there were lots of casual spectators encouraging runners which was great to see. Hats off to one guy on his bike screaming encouragement at all of us on each lap, my understanding is he was unaffiliated and it warms the heart to hear someone wish you well.
The whole race delivered for me and without the sun shining so bright, it might have been a very strong PB. Hats off to the organisers, they really delivered and I can see this race getting very, very popular.
