Having raced the 70.3 Weymouth the week before, I wasn't sure if I could match my performance from the year before (1:19:43). I arrived early as mum was on registration again. Had time to kill, bumped in to Jessica Purdyand Marc Purdy chatted for a while. As my start time of 11:12am drew closer I began to feel pumped up as I watched everyone getting in a swimming and speeding into T1. I thought to myself "Fuck it, Im going to give 110%" I got in the pool and was counted down and I was away. The first two lengths went by quick and I got into a pace that felt great. The rest of the swim was paced great. The paddle indicating 2 left was waved and I pushed the last 2 lengths. Got out and hit the timing mat at 8:08, Boom PB swim, Goal one complete.Whizzed up transition, got my helmet on, number belt, bike shoes and I was away. Knowing the route was my weapon here and my target was an avg of 18.5 mph. I kept my cadence on target and the first 6 miles were soon done I was soon at the hill. I had to get up the hill as fast as I could so not to lose too much speed. i got 3/4 way up, hitting a HR of 167 ppm, I dropped to my easiest gear to get over the top.Soon back into a harder gear to get the momentum back and was soon clawing back and lost speed once I hit the fast down hill into the out skirts of Somerton. Then a nasty left turn followed by a short hill, keeping my eye on my cadence I soon was up the top and still had a couple of gears left. !! I caught my breath then again attacked the next 2 miles to get out of somerton to the next downhill. With no traffic behind me I could take the best line to avoid the few bumps near the bottom of the hill. Whizzed past the photographer and the Halfway house to the next down then up. At the top I saw I had 4 mins to do the last little bit back to T2 and get back before my self imposed limit of 44 mins. I undone my velcro straps, feet on top of the shoes and to the dismount line and over the timing mat. Boom 43:59. Goal 2 complete. A quick run to rack my bike, over shot by 5 feet !!. Racked the bike, helmet off and shoes on, grabbed my shades and made my way out of T2. I heard a few people shout at me from the sidelines" Go rob". My goal was a sub 7:13 per mile run, I kept this in mind as I made it trough the first mile my pace was on point for a 7:05 per mile run. It was being to get tough once i got onto the road section and my pace got a bit faster. Quickly I found my self on the return to the finish section and a quick glance at my time I realised that I was going to hit a pb. As i got into the last 100m I picked up the pace and crossed the line in 1:17:05. Goal 3 complete.
