← Digicel St Lucia Triathlon

I did this race in 2014, I had a great holiday but the race itself, well it's just a bit boring.

Firstly I didn't stay at the "official" race hotel, I stayed at the much nicer http://www.capmaison.com - the general manager, englishman Ross Stevens is a triathlete/cyclist, a top guy  and competed in the race when I was there. Handy for bike routes/local course advice etc.

i did the Cutlass - Olympic distance with a shortened bike leg. It seemed a very long way to go to do a sprint.

The race itself, the swim is in Rodney Bay and you don't need a wetsuit in the Carribean Sea. Running start from the beach and a single lap swim. There was somebody with a hose to rinse the sand off of your feet at the entrance to T1 which was a nice touch.

The bike ride is laps of an out and back course which has a couple of climbs, one is quite steep but nothing to be scared of. It's a good idea to recce the bike course first here so you know what the climbs will take out of you.  Apart from the climb it's a bit boring. Look out for potholes as well on the road up through the golf course it is not in good repair.

The run was awful. A large part of it was down a road with lots of hotel entrances so busy traffic with taxis and delivery vans - another part saw you running past disused shipping containers and HGV trailers. Uninspiring and surely not the best that St Lucia can offer.

It should be obvious but also bear in mind the heat. By the time that we got out onto the run it was 30deg and humid. Don't do this one if you don't like racing in the heat.

The organising staff were great, all really helpful and there was a good friendly atmosphere between the competitors. There were a couple of locl competitors and it made it onto the local TV station but otherwise not that much interest from the locals. I'm glad that I raced it - I had a great holiday but it's not one that I would feel the need to do again.
