Palma Marathon, based on the stunning southern coast of Mallorca is part of a weekend of running featuring marathon, half marathon, 10k and child's race.
Weekend started with the 'breakfast run' on Friday. This was a nice, chilled out 5k plod before the expo opened.
Race numbers were collected along with a really smart looking participation shirt for marathon runners.
There was a decent merch tent and other stalls. It was a good atmosphere.
From 12 noon on Saturday there was a 'pasta party' for all participants.
There was a good atmosphere on race day itself. Baggage was quick & easy and starting pens were well organised.
The full & half marathon started together, with marathoners running a 2nd lap to complete the 26.2miles. The race route had stunning views along the harbour & beach, before heading through the town and returning to the harbour. There were few sneaky 'bumps' and cobbles to run up, which were a real test on the 2nd lap.
The sun was intense throughout the day but thankfully there were regular water stations to keep us hydrated.
The marshals were amazing throughout the whole weekend.
It was a relief to see the finish line after the 2nd lap as I was struggling in heat.
Finishers received a reasonable medal and a few nibbles. There was also free pints of larger as well as Cola & alcohol free lager. The free post-race massage was very welcome. Later that evening there was a post race party with a free pint & hot dog for all participants.
The extremely high % of ladies taking part was refreshing to see. 43% in 2018 & similar this year also.
In summary-
Pros- Beautiful weather. Really well organised race with a feel good atmosphere. The various distances make it perfect for all abilities.
Finisher's shirt is superb.
Cons- The 2x lap marathon course was mentally quite tough, especially in the intense heat. The cobbles, turns and sneaky little 'hills' were a bit taxing on the legs.
Would I recommend this race? Yes, I would.
Thank you Parma marathon for a great event.
