← Angles Way Ultra

This was the first running of the Angles Way Ultra (and the organisers first ever ultra) and whilst there were definitely things that could be improved, it was still a good event.

Registration was simple (with tea and coffee which was gratefully received at 4am!) and drop bags were provided for the two drop bag points.

The race follows the Angles Way and so most of the direction was based on the permanent waymarkings, with the organisers adding extra arrows where appropriate. They also provided a GPX file so on the odd occasion I went the wrong way I barely went more than 50m off course before my watch dragged me back.

The aid stations were well stocked with sweet and savoury food (although I only took coke, water and oranges from them) and were manned by friendly volunteers but it would have been nice to know when the aid stations were coming (we were told the village each one was in but not being local that didn't help) and it would have been good if people working at the aid stations knew how far it was to the next one.

The course is generally flat with just a few short climbs, mostly on trails with a few short road sections. There were quite a lot of gates and rutted ground in the first half which stops you from getting into a great rhythm and also helps tire you out quicker! The course runs between villages so the views are mostly fields and small wooded areas except for a 9 mile (felt much longer!) slog alongside the Waveney river which is pretty exposed in the direct sun.

My main gripe was that on finishing we were given the exact same medal as the 50k finishers. Having run for almost 12hrs and just over 100km (I ran 63.4 miles but everyone seemed to have run slightly different amounts) it would have been nice if the medal had been slightly different (just having different coloured bands with the distance on would have been enough for me).
