It was such a good idea, I can see why so many people would want to run a marathon in Zurich that starts as the bells chime on New Years Eve. But the reality was that this was pretty dreadful. It was, for all intents and purposes, a shitty lap race along a canal 10K outside Zurich in Schlieren. It is pitch dark so you need a head torch, and it is too crowded. If the weather is bad it is shocking. The route is a there and back on either bank of a canal on a tow path pock marked with tripping hazards and puddles. Too many runners means that you will inevitably trip or get soaked. There are 4 laps for the full, 2 for the half and one for the quarter. The photos will show fireworks and fires, but is not fun. The idea of posting the fastest marathon time in the world for the year is an enticement, but the reality is poor and most drop out after one lap when they realise how bad it is.
