← The Summer GMU

This race is a little bit legendary, well the 45 mile version is, and that is thanks to Ira Rainey and his book. It is self nav 45 mile race running the boundary of Bristol. The 30 mile version starts 3 hours later in Keynsham and follows 2/3 of the same route and is called the Green Boy. It is really self nav, but you can hire GPS devices from the race oganiser and they supply multiple maps (satellite view, OS, written directions) and there are pacers (or timelords) that run on the hours. The route itself takes in a lot of the surrounding countryside, you are in fields a lot, but also there is plenty of road, villages and the occasional town to deal with. The race ends with a crossing of the bridge, stopping at the Green Man statue in the Ashton Court grounds and finished at the school. There are only 2 CPs on the 30 miler, one at 12 miles and the next at 22 and it is tough. The Winter version doubly so. The Summer version, as of 2019 will run clockwise around Bristol, with the Winter version going the other way. The Summer version has more sunlight, and harder ground so maybe try that one first, then come back for the Winter and then the 45s.
