Rockingham is fantastic opportunity for a 10K PB, with a fast flat course set in a unique surrounding. Unfortunately, 2018 was the last year as the race course has now been sold off and will be knocked down in 2019. The race HQ is situated in one of the garages alongside the pit stop in the middle of the track, which is reached through an inspiring tunnel many feet under the track, linking the pit and stadium. The registration process is well organised with plenty of volunteers, and even with 3 different events taking place almost simultaneously you get your race number and timing chip very quickly. Interestingly, the timing chips are not the normal paper ones attached to the shoes but a reusable ankle fitting solution. I took part in the 10k again, and we started shortly after 13:15. The route is 2 laps of the track plus a small extra bit at the start to ensure the exact distance. There are several water stations on route which is a plus and not that common for 10k races. The route itself is relatively flat with only a few small inclines, but none that test the quads. One thing I have always found with the route is the final straight can be very windy, in fact one year I felt I was almost walking for a short period as the wind was so strong. However, the races' almost flat profile makes it a very good PB course. On your last lap, you are guided into the finishing straight lined with the crowd cheering you on. For spectators, this is a brilliant course as the top of the pits double as a viewing platform giving clear views of the whole course and field. Perfect for those who dress appropriately for the autumnal weather. On crossing the finishing line you are guided back into the pit stop garage to collect your race medal (the bling) and goody bag, consisting of a bottle of water, banana and bag of crisps… perfect for refuelling after a hard race. The race medal is very well designed and sized, and incorporates the raceway theme into each years bling. I've done many shorter races where the medal is a bit of anti-climax, being an off the shelf generic type, but not Rockingham's! The icing on the cake, is that as part of your race entry, there is a professional photographer capturing them perfect athletic poses, or funny faces which is how I normally look. These photos are free to use after the event and only include a small respectful tag to the event and photographer. It is such a shame that this was the last event and I must applauded the SBR management for such a well organised event, plus a massive thank you to all the volunteers who braved the elements. I look forward to trying some of SBR's other events.
