← IRONMAN Barcelona

IM Barcelona Calella In a quaint town along the coast North East of Barcelona. Firstly organise how you will transport Bike Boxes & cases. It’s 30 mile journey, unless your in a group & can share taxi which could be €100+ Then your other options are Train which is €10 one way, one change & roughly 2-3 hours, a hassle but cheapest option. The Sagales Airport Bus is €40 one way for 2 that includes bike box ( extra) which runs frequently. Select Hotel near Transition ( by Calella Rail Station) Ironman are not sympathetic after you are finished you have to go back to collect everything! It’s a smooth run event & everything is located on sea front with 1.5k walk between Swim Start / Transition & Expo / Finish. Thunderstorms over night in the morning we were greeted by a choppy Sea Swim. This is an Ironman so you just get in & get on with it. It’s warm clear blue water just wave at the Jellyfish below they wave back ;) I actually loved the easy out and back 1 lap swim! Bike route is 2 laps flat & fast, ok it had a climb but nothing major, helped break up the Peloton of drafters & spread cyclists out. Yes there are Penalty shooters on mopeds so be careful when caught in groups. I just wished the Special Needs was located more towards the 50k Feed stations & not at the 91k turn & end of the Finish lap, I needed it well before then! The run was flat 3 laps. Great for supporters in start and end of each lap but your main 10k of the run is out towards back end of beyond. Once it hit darkness the road for at least 4K was so dark & no lights along a road next to the railway line to the turn point, the feed station was only light at what seemed the longest tunnel! It really is harsh & with the torrential downpours the roads heading back to the Finish were just flooded! There was plenty of feed stations although not enough savoury. I’m so glad for Special Need bags , but note you loose time trying to find them as there is no one to help you.. I might have finished a drowned rat but It’s such a sense of achievement . You can’t predict the weather even in Spain! It is an excellent Ironman and you can see why it’s popular the Spanish are so supportive. Bling is good & a duffel bag for keeps.
