← XNRG Humanity Direct Tring Ultra

This was my first ultra and it turned out to be a good choice. XNRG provide good, detailed information beforehand and when I got to Tring station their mini-bus was waiting to take me to the start where there was access to changing space, loos etc. Thorough briefing at the start and off we went. The course was a mixture of canal side, woods and hills (oh those hills!) but great countryside and great views. There were checkpoints about every 11km with drinks and plenty of food to keep us going. The volunteers at each were incredibly welcoming and really looked after us. The field is split into walkers (who set off first) the bulk of runners (setting off next) and then the speed merchants (going an hour later). For me a nervous newbie this was great because I didn’t feel under any pressure, I didn’t really know where I was in the field, and it just felt like everyone could go at their own pace. The course was really well marked and easy to follow. Nice medal at the finish, and a tee-shirt; also a certificate for all the first time ultra runners – along with some very welcome tea and cake. Everyone I came across was really friendly and I would highly recommend the event. There obviously isn’t a lot of crowd support out on the course, but we did come across quite a few dog walkers who were impressed at the idea of people voluntarily running 50km in the rain! Participants had the option to enter free and raise money for Humanity Direct or pay an entry fee which went to the charity, which made the day even more worthwhile.
