My 1st Trail Outlaws race. Been wanting to do one of their races for a while and I wasn’t disappointed. Trail Outlaws had taken over organisation of this event for the 1st time this year. The race is on an active RAF base and this year the RAF were celebrating their centenary. Online entry was easy, although numbers were limited (300) so early entry is essential, like many of their events. Pre race information was good. As the race was run on an active RAF base, extra ID and pre registration was required but we were well informed of this. As we arrived at the base we had to wait for a bit until we got information about gaining access. Although vehicle and person pre registration was done before arriving, it still took a long time to get on site. Hopefully in the future this process will be improved. Parking, race registration and the start area were all very close together. Collection of race number and timing bracelet was simple but ID was required. ID was required to gain entrance to the base anyway. Finisher’s T-Shirts were collected before the start of the race which I still find strange. A choice of a free Trail Outlaws mug or snood was also available along with the t-shirt. Official merchandise was available to buy with a percentage of sales going to a RAF charity along with sales of raffle tickets. Due to people still trying to get on site an early decision to delay the start of the race by 15 minutes was taken and relayed to the runners. I know people like to know the toilet facilities so ... well they were disappointing. At the registration area there was one toilet for everyone, so a long queue. There was word of other toilets nearby by were limited also. A good pre race briefing about the route and signage and we were off. The course was a mixture of road and hard gravel tracks through stunning countryside and bits of woodland around the RAF base. Runners were wearing a mixture of road and light trail shoes. 3 water/sweets feeding stations were on route. Marshals were placed at certain crossroads to help guide you but otherwise good signage guided you round the course. Due to the race being on an active base, there was military hardware around the route which added something extra to the uniqueness of the event. The only spectator support was at the finish due to the nature of the course and was only a few friends and family. After handing in the timing bracelet to confirm time and placing you collected a great unique medal. Tea, coffee and sweets were available back at the registration area after the race. After watching some more runners coming in, we set off home as there was nothing else to do on site. Results were quickly out online and official free pictures were available a few days later. A unique location with stunning scenery and a great half marathon race. Although it was classed as a half, 14 miles were run, a nice little bonus. Overall a challenging but great race with stunning scenery at a unique location.
