← Hell On The Humber - Endurance Race

The HELL ON THE HUMBER or HOTH is a lap race with a difference - the laps are across the Humber Bridge. 2 miles across, 2 miles back and bridges, as you learn very quickly, are not flat.

There is a 6, 12, 24 and 36 hour version of the race. Those who run the 6 tend to come back and try the longer races. Families camp at the race HQ and there is tea and coffee, biscuits, all manner of sweets, sausage rolls and yum yums.

I did not know what to expect, despite having run numerous 6 and 7 hour lap races. The race website is a bit naff. The rules, although humourously written, come over as needlessly harsh. No music? For a 36 hour endurance race? I would do mad. The email was also humourous and harsh. But I guess it was just the tone that was missing, the RD is a funny guy, and has to ensure that all the safety, and littering etc rules are adhered to or the authorities would stop the race from going ahead.

The race itself was fine, you do need to buddy up. No music. Dull laps. Probably high winds or rain. And overnight too. The 36 hour race starts at 7pm Friday, the 24 hour race 7am Saturday and the 6 and 12 hour race at 7pm Saturday.

I did the 6 and it was alright. Far better than many of the lap races I have done. The Tshirt is awesome, very dia de muertos. The tea was welcome between laps, as was the toilet facitilies.

I would actually recommend it if you can endure it. 7 laps for an ultra/marathon? I took it easy and just did 24 miles.
