← Snowdonia Trail Marathon

I'd previously done the Trail Marathon so I knew what lay in store in the latter part of the race. The Ultra distance is new this year and thus included an unknown quantity in the additional 10 miles above Beddgelert. It was also my first Ultramarathon.

Always Aim High Events consistently put on good events which are well organised, marshaled and coordinated, and #STM18 was no exception to that.

The route is almost all off-road and has sections on public paths which are easily negotiated, as well as sections of mountain terrain which are somewhat more challenging.

If the distance is not a challenge enough, the fact that the main climb (Snowdon via Pen Y Pass and Pyg Track) is in the last part of the race adds to the difficulty. Even the downhill isn't an easy one.

The additional section for the Ultra was great. Very much towards mountain running and included tough climbs and technical descents. It added an additional dimension to the race rather than feeling like a bolt-on to just get some extra distance into it.

A nice touch was that the Ultra had its own medal (the 3 other distances all got the same medal). I don't normally bother about such things, but this one was well and truly earned!
