← Crich Monument Race

OK, I admit to being slightly biased - the Crich Monument Race is held 2 miles from my house - but it is definitely worth checking out.

The event usually sells out before the day, so early entry is a must.  Registration is easy and communication goos. The event is held as part of the Crich Village Fete, so large crowds are guranteed.  This year it also formed part of the 'Crich Fitness Fortnight' where lots of different sporting activities are available.

The route started above the village recreation ground where the fete was in full swing.  A bit of a Buffalo charge through the narrow village streets came before the first climb and out into the fields. There was a bit of a delay at the top of the first field as there was a queue for a stile, but everyone was in good spirits and not bothered by this.  The views here are stunning.  There then follows 3km of descent, through fields and a woded area before coming out onto the Cromford Canal.  3-4km along the towpath is the low pint of the race (in both senses of the word), before you get another 3km straight up the side of the hill towards Crich Stand. This is a challenging climb, but you are well reqrded with some even more stunning views as you emerge at the top. You then have another 1.5km left through the village and back on to the event field, which is packed with people by the end.

This is a very well-organised event.  There is no medal, but you get a bottle of beer, brewed especially for the event. This adds to its uniqueness and I would thoroughly recommend taking part - watch out for entries opening though, they go quickly!
