← Leamington Spa Half Marathon

on entering the Leamington Spa half, I didn’t think too much about it being in July (like a typical Brit, don’t get your hopes up about the weather) well what a mistake that was..! However the days leading up to the event the race organisers were great at keeping us up to date on extra water stations etc!

The day itself was at hot as promised, the 9am strict start time was going to be ideal. So once getting into the starting area and then being informed of a 45 minute delay as the temperature rose and the dehydration kicking in was not the best race start!

The race itself was not flat, hitting a few steep hills ( beware of mile 2-3) and long inclines up until mile 9. This was tough in the weather, and the amazing local support and well supplied water stations really helped push you through. Water pistols, hoses, jelly beans and extra water were all handed out in every village you run through. The scenery is beautiful however! :)

From mile 9 onwards, even more supporters are out to help you back through Leamington. The course here is much more forgiving and there are declines! Thank goodness! You can believe the marshals when they say it’s all downhill now!

The last part of the course could do with a rework, with the finish in sight you run past and then round a park. This is mentally tough, and to be honest boring!

The peripherals - medal and t shirt are great, and also the baggage handling, Marshall support and focus on eco friendly aspects are all a plus. Toilet facilities are lacking, and cups instead of water bottles are not so great!

Would I run again? Maybe, but weather dependent as it is a tough course even so
