← The SF Experience Fan Dance Summer #1

24km may not seem far, but when you’re trekking up the side of a huge hill it kind of takes a lot out of you!

Fan Dance follows the classic military training route over the Pen y fan, and can be completed as “clean fatigue” (only carrying what you need +2 litres of water) “load bearing” (35lbs + 3 litres of water) or “load stone” (45lbs + 3 litres of water).

Cut offs for half time STRICTLY apply (to the second) and are decided on the day. This tends to be 2:30-3:30 dependant on conditions. If you do not meet the half way cut off, you are relieved from the race and taken back to base camp.

Picnic food is supplied at half way point as well as water refills.

Marshall supervision was EXCELLENT. All ex-military seasoned well ‘ard people who are very aware of the signs to pull a participant from the race. Many are also involved in ultra races in the wales area.

The scenery is second to none. Views as far as the eyes can see, stunning welsh countryside. Route covers an old roman road, when you’re struggling up Jacobs ladder the Roman drainage is useful to focus on the small victories rather than the bloody great big hill ahead of you!

Incline of some areas (for example Jacobs Ladder) can be extremely tough weight bearing and with this in mind, the race itself should not be taken lightly. This is a well ‘ard event for well ‘ard people, however “clean fatigue” is a welcome addition for the average trail runner.
