← Canal Canter Summer Extravaganza

‘Summer Canal Canter Extravaganza’ is another IT’S GRIM UP NORTH (IGUN) series of races covering distances ranging from 5km to 32 Mile Ultra. It really does cover all abilities. I was running the full marathon.

On a previous similar IGUN race there was congestion at the start but this time distances set off in waves & this solved the problem.

The course was a chip timed, out & back which took runners to 20 miles then another out & back the other way to make up the additional 6.2 miles for the full marathon. Entirely on Canal towpaths the surface is generally very good although there are parts where caution is needed to avoid trips.

Race briefing was thorough although organisers maybe need to invest in a loud speaker because it was difficult to hear at times.

We set off & the field soon spreaded out. The very nature of the course means public support in virtually nothing, except for dog walkers, cyclists, etc giving their encouragement. Biggest support came from other runners of the various distances, many handing out high fives as we passed each other. It was quite lonely at times.

Aid stations were every few miles & had a selection of snacks (crisps, Jaffa Cakes, Jelly Babies, etc) plus most importantly WATER. Volunteers at these stations also acted as cheerleaders & motivators. I can’t praise them enough.

Finishers of all distances were rewarded with a quality medal & Finishers bag containing chocolate & a locally brewed beer. They even had a vegan finisher’s bag. There was also a large selection of home baked cakes, biscuits & snacks. Again there was even a vegan option. Top marks! As if that wasn’t enough Finishers were treated to a FREE barbaque serving a selection of burgers, hotdogs & roast potatoes.

IN SUMMARY....

HIGHS: Well organised & fun event.

LOWS: If your’re a runner who NEEDS crowd support, this might not be a race for you.

BOTTOM LINE: IGUN really look after runners, a definite PB opportunity. BBQ is a massive bonus.
