Had an amazing experience. It was far more “light touch” than a lot of races which are far more rules heavy. The unofficial aide stations were so lovely handing out sweets and water. Not only would I do it again, I’ve already singed up for the summer version.

If I could’ve given zero or minus Stars I would have. I paid £99.84 to run the Wintergreen 45 miles (72km), and I paid £109.84 in total. A lot of money, and I got up at 3am to drive 45 minutes, hoping for a good day, like every other event. However, This was the worst event I’ve ever been to, an absolutely horrific and terrible day, and the people running it do not care about you, or Health and Safety, it’s a money making scam. I would class the man running it as one of the most unkind people, and the other Marshalls were mostly unkind and very unfriendly. The 12 hr Timelord ran off leaving me completely alone far before Checkpoint 1. She was going too fast for 12 hours, and I could have finished within 12 hours. She was supposed to be “Mrs Mop” but I was left entirely alone for the whole 50k that I ran, in the mist, deep in the countryside that I do not know, trying to navigate. I was forced into the position of being entirely isolated and stranded deep in the countryside, a position I would NEVER put myself in, and I felt seriously unsafe the whole time. I reached CP 1 at 9.17am (cutoff was 9.20am). The Marshalls had already closed the Checkpoint already, and told me to get out. I said “some congratulations or friendliness wouldn’t go amiss.” I was not allowed to catch my breath. I cried at CP 2 because I felt so unsafe and alone. The course was extremely muddy and I was slipping everywhere, I could have easily slipped and fallen. I did fall and get a cut and bled from my hand, but no one was there to help me. They abandoned and stranded me in an unsafe situation. I missed Checkpoint 3 by 15 minutes. The Marshalls closed it and went to the pub. By the time I got to the pub for a lift, they had left the pub and abandoned me. I was freezing cold, shaking, and my lips turned blue. They did not care about me or my health and safety at all. They eventually sent a Marshall to pick me up. She arrived 40 minutes later. This Marshall told me that the 12 hr Timelord had been telling the Checkpoints there was no-one behind her, when the Timelord knew I was behind her (because she had passed me and run away from me telling me I had to catch up immediately, but she never waited for me.) When I said I’d been stranded and isolated deep in the countryside, feeling Unsafe, this Marshall also told me that if my Dot had stopped on the Tracker, they would have come to get me. This is utterly irresponsible and appalling. If my tracker had stopped, and they had actually noticed (having been told no one was behind the Timelord), I could have already been attacked, raped, dead, heart attack, medical reason, or had an accident. I literally could’ve died and no-one would have noticed. They completely refused to give me a medal (or a T-shirt), and I have no race photos at all, despite the fact I had run 50k of the 72k, and they were running an adjacent 50km race. Any other event organiser would have happily given this medal (& T-shirt), but then they have morals, standards, empathy, and kindness, whereby this man did not. I don’t think he understands how bad this makes him look. They have not sent me a post-race email, so I cannot see results. Basically, I was a non-entity at this race, and I am disgusted and severely concerned. The manager even picked on me, mocked me, and bullied me about my running ability. His words to me were nothing but nasty and extremely unkind. He tried to manipulate the situation to target me, and attempted to humiliate and undermine me in front of a crowd, which was a very low tactic from him. He did not listen to or care about my upset. The Checkpoints were very understocked. The small feeble plastic cup cost £10. This company is only interested in people’s money. They do not care about you, or your Health and Safety. (I also see this from the past Reviews about running an event during Covid.) These people are unkind bullies. If a company takes your money for an event, they have responsibility for your Health and Safety, and to make an event fun and safe. They took my money (a lot of it), and that’s where their responsibility ended for me. If you’re choosing whether to do one of the events run by this Company, don’t bother.

I took part in the winter GMU after completing the boy the year before, the race itself was great the commutation before the race was excellent keeping you up to date on what to expect & when. Getting the number was easy as there were lots of volunteers to hand them out & each checkpoint was managed superbly with loads of food & drink on offer… you can as much or as little as you needed. The guys manning them wrote down our numbers as soon as we arrived to ensure we could move on with the race. The finish line crew were great cheering us in even though we were practically at the end, the were still there to welcome us in after being stood there for a long time in the cold & dark!!! The medal was massive & I LOVE a medal it’s definitely a great keepsake along with the certificate of joining the Woodwose! Only downside was there wasn’t a lot of colour choice in my size of tshirt, I had a dark grey colour which you couldn’t really see the motif on the front but tbh I feel proud wearing it anyway!! Can’t wait to do the summer one & get my buckle

Thank you so much for sharing your experience – and well done on completing the Winter GMU after your Green Boy the year before! We’re really glad to hear the pre-race communication, volunteer support, and aid stations all made a difference on the day. It's especially lovely to hear that our finish line crew helped you feel welcomed and celebrated, even after a long day out in the cold – they’ll really appreciate your kind words. We’re thrilled you loved the medal (we love a big medal too!). We completely understand the point about colour options, and we’ll definitely take that on board going forward. We can’t wait to welcome you back in the summer for your buckle – it’ll be a special one!

Amazing timelords helped me duck under the 12 hours for my first time-critical ultra. This felt like a really community-led run, with super supportive Marshalls and a lovely atmosphere throughout the race, meaning it was welcoming for newbies as well as seasoned ultra-runners, something which is increasingly hard to find. The medal was epic and there's the option to NOT have a tee-shirt, which for an environmentalist was super important. The additional handwritten certificate at the end was the icing on the cake

Thank you so much for your wonderful feedback, and huge congratulations on ducking under the 12-hour mark for your first time-critical ultra – that’s a fantastic achievement! We’re thrilled to hear the Time Lords, marshals, and overall atmosphere helped make the experience welcoming and supportive. Creating a space that’s inclusive for both newcomers and seasoned runners is really important to us, so your words mean a lot. We’re also really pleased you appreciated the option to skip the t-shirt – we know that matters to many, and we’re proud to offer that choice. And we’re delighted you liked the medal and certificate – it’s our way of marking the journey you’ve been on. We’d love to welcome you back again soon!

This is advertised as a self-nav event and a GPX and full written instructions (including photographs) are provided well in advance via the website. The organisers send out several emails in the weeks preceding the event which outline any diversions and the logistical arrangements for the start and finish points for both races (45 and 30 miles). The event is cupless and the organisers stress both in the pre-race information and in the race briefing on the day how important it is not to drop litter during the event, so very environmentally friendly . There are minimal aid stations compared to some other races, but this is made very clear in the information provided, and it is perfectly possible to carry enough fuel and hydration to make it between these points (even for those with dietary requirements who really need to be completely self-sufficient). The 30-mile event isn't very lumpy compared to a lot of trail ultras but this year there was an awful lot of mud which made up for this in terms of making it challenging! The race hq at the school is ace (good toilets, hot showers and a hot meal provided at the end), the marshals are really good and the medal is very good quality - what more could you want?!

I unfortunately had a very negative experience with this race. We did not have great weather (which cannot be helped) however the course makers thought it was appropriate to send people wading through freezing cold waist high water on a day where it had snowed in the morning - instead of using a detour. The aid stations were shockingly poor - 1 portaloo for all the runners and a 20 minute wait for toilet paper is not ok. Aid station 3 had run out of food when we arrived. And then unfortunately I had to withdraw as my hip flexor seized due to the cold water. I completed 57km. I emailed the organisers afterwards and asked for a Green Boy medal as I had completed 50km within the time frame and the response I got was almost mocking my failure. Not only was I refused a medal but was told I could buy a t shirt. Having paid nearly £100 to enter the level of organisation, attitude and quality of this race was terrible. Subsequently I have been ask my opinion on your race and I do not recommend it. Please change - kindness and consideration costs nothing.

Thank you for your feedback, and we’re genuinely sorry to hear that your experience did not meet expectations. We appreciate that the weather this year created very tough conditions, particularly with the unexpected flooding. The waist-high water was not present during our course check the day before, and unfortunately, we’re not able to perform a full recce on the morning of the race due to time, access, and safety constraints. In some rural sections, alternative routes simply don’t exist, and we’re forced to rely on runners making cautious decisions on the ground. That said, we are actively looking into ways to improve our response to last-minute course changes in future. Regarding the aid stations and toilets: checkpoints 1, 2, 4, and the finish each have two toilets available. Checkpoint 3 does only have one, which we acknowledge can lead to waiting during busy periods – this is something we’re working to improve. However, checkpoint 3 is supplied by the White Horse pub, providing an effectively unlimited supply of food and drink, so we’re confident it would not have run out of supplies. We do make it a priority to overstock all stations to avoid exactly these situations. On the matter of the medal, we understand how disappointing it must have been not to finish after completing such a significant distance. However, our policy has always been that medals are awarded only to those who complete the event they entered. The Green Man and Green Boy are two separate races, with different start points and requirements, so unfortunately we are not able to offer a medal for a different race than the one entered. As for the t-shirt, the cost is included in the entry price, and any additional charge would have been solely for postage if the item was requested after the event. Lastly, we were saddened to see a 1-star rating for staff. Our volunteers and event team are consistently praised for their kindness, encouragement, and support on the day, and we’ve received no other complaints in this regard. We understand your disappointment, but we respectfully believe this doesn’t reflect the efforts of those on the ground who gave up their time to help every runner. We value all feedback and will continue to use it to improve the event. We wish you the best in your future ultra running adventures.

Have done the Winter GMU 4 times now and always enjoy coming back to it. Course is usually a muddy mess but that makes it all the more fun. Feels like a good throwback event for people to go out and enjoy. Highly recommend.

Thank you so much for your continued support – four Winter GMUs is seriously impressive! We're glad you embrace the mud and see it as part of the fun (we completely agree!). It’s great to hear the event feels like a proper throwback – that grassroots, no-fuss spirit is exactly what we aim for. Thanks again for the recommendation, and we’d love to see you back for a fifth round in the mud!
