One second after the 13 -hour finish cut off and you don't get a medal! Yes, it's that petty! No medical support at aid stations at all too. Help is maximum 20 minutes away for emergencies only. My advice, there are much better Ultras available. I will never run a Centurion event again that's for sure!

Would I recommend this or any Centurion race? The answer is a no! READ ON. Be aware this event has aid station cut-offs that are challenging and are zealously enforced. In fact even if you are 1 second late at any cut-off you will not allowed to continue. Obviously being a public route you can carry on but you won't get a medal at the end for finishing as your tracker is ripped off at the aid station you are late at. There was a chap that was half way around the running track at the end when 13 hours were up and he didn't get a medal! Petty or what? Centurion's James Elson is rigid on this and finishing doesn't mean you get a finisher's medal if you are even a second after 13 hours (21:30). Be aware that the hills are brutal. You will walk up them all! The ground is mostly chalk and loose flint tracks with grass on some parts. Running the downhills and flats sections is mostly possible. There is the "valley of Doom" on the fist part of downhill into Eastbourne. With tired legs and in the dark, possibly alone, it is an injury (or worse) waiting to happen. "Technical" doesnrt quite cover it! My advice is download the GPX to your Garmin or phone and run it as two halves and see for yourself what is involved. There are public drinking taps where the aid stations are and they are easy to find. You don't need to pay Centurion to run the South Downs Way 50-mile. There are no medics at any aid stations. If you need medical help you are own your own. The website even says you need to be prepared to look after yourself. Only actual emergencies are dealt with and attended within a target 20 minutes.

Another great Centurion event, with all the pluses that entails (organisation, friendliness, well-stocked and well-marshalled aid stations, clearly marked trail). Lovely course - stunning views. Nice to finish in the stadium, just like it's longer sibling the SDW100.

Lumpy Bumpy I should write more really...what an amazing experience. My first ultra and I could not ask for more. Just shy of 11 hours of the best and worst thing I've ever done/run. Technical, challenging, beautiful views, amazing mix of like minded runners and brilliant volunteers. Such a great day and an experience I'll never forget. There was debutante like me and hardened centurion veterans, we all had the same amazing time regardless

Amazing event.  I DNFed here three years ago and came back with a lot more training under my belt.  The event was really well organised and coped with the COVID restrictions very well.  SDW is a beautiful trail and we had perfect conditions.  Aid stations were very DIY to maintain social distancing but still well stocked and the crew were very helpful.  Course was well marked and with the live trackers they now use it was good for friends and family to keep an eye on us.

I can't think of any areas where the organisation fell down other than being the last but one person over the finish line (it was a staggered start) they had run out of XL tshirts which was a bit of a shame but not the end of the world........

Would thoroughly recommend the event.

As with all Centurion events the race was i credibly well orvanised. Great pre race into on the website in advance, two pre race emails sent in the two weeks leading up to the event. Registration was simple, kit check first, then pick up the race number that not only had your name on the front, but had preprinted your details, emergency contact number, medical conditions and allergies. The race brief was clear and straightfoward, the route was perfectly marked (and Centurion send out two separate sweepers to make sure all the signs, market tape and any rubbish that could have come from a runner gets picked up. The aid stations are so well stocked with fruit, gels, water, tailwind, coke, sandwiches,, wraps, biscuits, cake etc that you are spoiled for choice, and the aid station crews look after every single runner like they are personal crews. The finish line has people cheering you on for the last 400 meters, and you are awarded an amazing medal, high quality tshirt, get your finish line photo taken by a great professional photographer and then can enjoy tea, coffee and hot food. There really is nothing you can fault with the event.

I had no crew or anyone to meet me at the finish but was well looked after by event crew who celebrated my finish & brought me food & tea A fantastic day

This was my 3rd Centurion race and as always the organisation is exemplerary.  Feed stations are superb with a wide range of food from sausages, egg sarnies, crisps, nuts, the usual jelly babies etc, through to home made Vegan brownies.

All the marshalls and volunteers are superstars on Centurion events and really do their utmost to help you round.

Navigation is easy other than 2 points which are both described well on the website and were marshalled on the day.

Limited local support because you're really in the middle of nowhere but there were some big clusters of friends and family at certain points which was nice.

The course was great but got a little bit samey by the end but I think that was more me than the course. The finish around the athletics track was brilliant and it allowed my two small kids to join in.

There's literally nothing I can say negative about this race. :-)

Not living far from this area and the South Downs being one of my favourite places to run it was not a difficult decision to enter this event for the 3rd time. Centurion Running host excellent events which are very well organised, superbly marshalled and with aid stations which are like a banquet feasts. The route is testing with over 6000ft of elevation to overcome but has areas with spectacular views (weather permitting). If the going gets tough there is always moral support from your fellow competitors to help lift your spirts. I would highly recommend this event.

I’ve heard so many good things about the Centurion Running events that I was keen to give this one a go and it certainly didn’t disappoint.

Easy to sign up for, although it did fill up quickly, the pre race info was spot on in terms of course/kit info and other relevant bits.

Kit check and number collection/bag drop was a well oiled operation.

The course itself is TOUGH with plenty of hills to challenge all abilities and this year it was windy to add an extra challenge. The South Downs offer some amazing views on a clear day but sadly this year it was a little murky so couldn’t see too much.

The course marking was perfect, at no time was I uncertain of where to go. Plenty of signs, tape, or chalk arrows to follow even when running alone with nobody to follow. The support along the course was brilliant, both from the marshals, other runners crew and also general public - a really good vibe the whole way.

Aid stations were well stocked and well organised with the volunteers filling bottles and passing whatever you wanted to eat. Every aid station was like a banquet table!

I finished with a really well supported lap of the track in Eastbourne where everyone is cheering and is a huge boost. A fantastic medal and t-shirt for finishers too.

Not sure what else to add  definitely worth considering if you’re looking for a scenic 50 miler. Might be a bit tough for a first timer but don’t let that put you off.

A really well organised event that I’d highly recommend.
