Sierra Leone Marathon was up there with one of my favourite ever races! From the stunning course, incredible support around the route, and brilliant aid stations with coconut water, fruit, plantain chips and more. I felt very well looked after and safe throughout the race. The reason for the lower rating for sustainability and finish area is that they use plastic bags for water at the aid stations, however I appreciate that Sierra Leone doesn't have the privilege to think about plastic waste with other more pressing issues. The finish area was great, running into the stadium was an amazing feeling. They had plenty of beers and soft drinks to rehydrate but there was a lack of vegan food which I really could have done with at this time. I should have packed some really, knowing that it would have been a difficult request. Overall, an experience that will stay with me for ever and I can't wait to return to run the marathon again 🌟

Thank you for your review Jess, really appreciate it and so happy to hear that this is one of your favourite ever races (knowing you do so many!) There are challenges to organising this event, especially in a developing area but we are constantly trying to improve so thank you for your feedback

Before I signed up, I remember Josh saying something along the lines of “you never regret a run, but this one is life enhancing.” Having now completed it I can confirm this is 100% true.

I have been competing in jungle-themed foot races all over the world for decades now. This one stood out for a multitude of reasons – everything from the superb vistas to the excellent vibes on the trails. I would do this again in a heartbeat.

Bo isn’t just a destination; it’s an experience that stays under your skin — humid, raw, and full of life. I travelled there for the Bo Half Marathon, expecting a challenge, but what I found was a community that ran beside you — cheering, laughing, offering coconuts and encouragement when you needed it most. The trails were wild and unpredictable — red dirt, uneven ground, tropical air so thick it felt like part of the workout. But somehow, the energy of the people made every kilometre lighter. There was this unspoken rhythm between runners and locals — kids sprinting barefoot beside you, strangers shouting your name like you were one of their own. Beyond the run, Bo had a simple charm. Days moved slowly, full of colour and warmth. I’d finish a training session, sit with a cold drink, and end up deep in conversation with someone I’d just met. Bo, located in the southern region of Sierra Leone, offers a distinctive blend of vibrancy, resilience, and authentic local charm. My visit coincided with the Bo Half Marathon — an event that revealed not only the physical demands of running in a humid tropical climate, but also the extraordinary warmth and spirit of its people. The course, set against a backdrop of red earth roads, palm-lined paths, and bustling neighbourhoods, was both challenging and deeply rewarding. Throughout the route, local residents gathered along the roadside to cheer, encourage, and even offer coconuts to runners — gestures that reflected the community’s generosity and enthusiasm. Their presence transformed what might have been a demanding race into a shared celebration of endurance and connection. Beyond the event itself, Bo presents a raw yet welcoming atmosphere. The town moves at its own rhythm — lively markets, friendly exchanges, and a pace of life that encourages genuine human interaction. Bo is not just a place to visit — it is a place to feel. Its community, resilience, and understated beauty remind visitors that travel is as much about people as it is about places. An inspiring and humbling destination, offering a powerful blend of culture, endurance, and genuine hospitality.

Hi Francesca, thank you for your feedback - as you can appreciate putting together a new course in Bo is difficult so for safety reasons (off the main highways) and to ensure that runners supported each other that is why we used the out and back and staggered food throughout to cater for all needs
