The Richard Burton 10K is always a fantastic race and this year was no different. The community really get behind the event and it has a great atmosphere. The waves structure brought in for the start line this year worked much better than previous years. There were also more toilets than last year, which is always good. The slate coaster, t-shirt and welsh cakes, as well as the tea bags were much appreciated.

I love this race. The community always come out and support this event and it is organised very well. Marshals are often familiar faces from the running community and the Sip for Kev station is always a highlight after those hills. The PA could not be heard around the toilet area prior to the race, and as such it wasn't heard by many that the start pens were open. The toilet queue was massive, there were only around 8 toilets (portaloos) across 2 locations for 2500 runners. When heading to the start pens having realised it was coming up to the start time, a marshal quite rudely told us to get into our pens or you won't be able to start the race, we explained there was a large queue at the toilets with many runners not realising the time. Some marshals in this area to advise moving to the start area would be helpful. As we tried to access our pens, we were stuck in a queue alongside the barriers to the pens, unable to move forward due to the volume of people. A few years ago the start pens were in the rugby field and this would possibly alleviate this issue. However, we were able to get through the next available gate to get into the start area (mixed within another pen) to be able to start the race. Despite these small issues, the race is amazing, I always enjoy this race and have run it for many years and will continue to run it for years to come. The finish area was managed really well, collecting the t-shirts, coaster and welsh cake was easy and done smoothly. A lot of races could benefit from how you set up the post-finish area. This has been on my list for years, and didn't disappoint. Park and ride from Port Talbot to the village of Cwmafan, and everything within a couple of hundred metres. The toilets weren't well signposted , which led to long queues as the start time approached. The route was challenging but beautiful, and the crowd support was very good in most parts of the course. At the 5km point there is a "Sip for Kev", which commemorates a local running personality (I think). This is the only place where I have been offered beer or whisky during a race!! The t-shirt appears to be a standard design every year, but a different colour. Instead of a medal we received a coaster, which was lovely. I suspect I might be back next year!!

This is my new favourite race. Sure, it’s extremely hilly and two short (100m) parts are so steep that almost everyone walks. But it’s also absolutely stunning and incredibly friendly. And it has a beer station with live music at 5k, to celebrate the completion of most of the climbing. The last 3k are gloriously downhill. While it would be difficult to get a PB, it’s an amazing and unique experience. The Welshcake and slate coaster at the end are a nice 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿touch as well. My top tip: arrive early (2 hours before start) to get parking.
