Was a really great course for a 5k - one flat lap and you’re done! thanks to that I got a PB, however I can see how it could get really boring for a half marathon and maybe even 10k.
In addition I think the mud and weather put the organisers at a huge disadvantage. The 5k start was moved to a very muddy area which made warming up tough as we couldn’t go onto the path because the other races were still going. They attempted to alleviate it was a staggered release which I think helped somewhat but not entirely.
I think the marshals and organisers did their best with what they had, but the congestion is something to keep in mind if you want a full sprint from go in the 5k you will have to make up the time after the congestion. However was super easy to do as for the rest of the course the path was wide and clear and easy to over take or be over taken without much fuss.
The main issue was parking, because the 5k started later when we arrived for parking it was nearly impossible to find a space. People had parked on roads that were blocking access leading to a spat between a van and a car, but because of the confusion and others parking where any space was available I can’t really blame them because at first glance it looked like additional parking and the mud and fog didn’t help that. We ended up parking on mud pretty far back and luckily my car was able to get free but other runners weren’t so lucky and we had to push cars out of mud - not something you want to do on tired legs. In addition me and the two other runners who were helping almost couldn’t get the car free and all the marshals had disappeared so there was a panic we wouldn’t be able to do it.
Overall a really fun 5k and will do it again when chasing that PB - the finish line, bag drop, and bib collection was wonderful - and I really love the medal, I think more marshals to help with navigation to the start line and to help deal with parking, especially later on in the day when the shorter races arrive would be helpful for future years.
