Firstly, the positives, what an absolutely stunning setting, especially as we had fantastic weather!! Parking, registration & transition, all very well done, straightforward & only a stones throw from each other. The swim was lovely, @ 14C, it was a very pleasant experience. I like a mass start & the first half ('up' the side of the island) was very enjoyable & well marked out with buoys. At the turnaround to go across the 'top' of the island, I found it hard to see here exactly I had to go (the 2 buoys side by side, at the top of the island were confusing, many of us werent sure whether to go between them or around them! Went around them in the end!). Second part of the swim was alot tougher, but that cant be helped, it was choppy & I felt more bouys were needed on the right for guidance as the lake was wider 'coming down' the other side of the island so swimmers 'scattered' & it was difficult to sight off them, a few large, bright buoys would help, hard to see the exit too until you got v near. Maybe a large inflatable sign is worth having at the exit?! I swam 2500m so was pretty fatigued coming out, would have appreciated a 'heads up' that it was a significantly longer swim than the usual 1.9k! Enjoyable nonetheless! The cycle route was good, had a bit of everything (couple of hills & lots of 'draggy bits!'). Lonely at times but beautiful scenery, especially with the blue skies & sun. Back at transition (2), they could have done with a marshall to direct us out to where the run starts, i had to call out to someone to ask where to go. The run, I thought anyway, was advertised as partially trail but it was majority trail/cross country with a smaller portion of road. Unfortunately, it's the run route that would put me off doing The Gauntlet again, large parts of the run were very dodgy underfoot & could easily lead to injury, ending a persons race & upcoming season! The field section literally had holes which were deadly dangerous & the gravel part had large stones & potholes which ruined any enjoyment as i was too busy trying to not twist an ankle. Another water station would have been great, especially with the heat. The girls at the aid stations were lovely so a big thanks to them for giving up their time :) Finish line was nice & the medal is really lovely. Although a goodie bag with a Castle Race Series bottle maybe & a few small treats or triathlon 'bits' (gels/electrolytes/a race belt or neck buff) would have been a good addition (for the €220 fee, its a small ask, I think anyway!). Overall a great race to do, very well organised, straightforward & gorgeous grounds. Its a pity that it's just the run that would prevent me from signing up again. That said, that's just my personal take/preference! Well done to all, from the marshalls, to the guy doing the commentary, to the swim support & everything in between. And thanks 😊

Thank you very much for taking the time to share such detailed and thoughtful feedback following The Gauntlet. We’re delighted to hear your positive comments about the setting, the weather, and the overall organisation, particularly around parking, registration, transition, and the swim support. It’s also great to know you enjoyed the swim, cycle route, and the atmosphere on the day, and we really appreciate your kind words about our marshals and aid station teams, which we will be sure to pass on. We also value your constructive feedback regarding the swim course marking and visibility, particularly around the turnaround point and exit. Your comments around buoy placement, course clarity in choppier conditions, and potential signage improvements are very helpful and will be reviewed with the race team and safety crew. Thank you as well for your note regarding communication of swim distance. We are sorry that the distance you experienced differed from expectations, and we will review this to ensure greater clarity and accuracy in future briefings. Your feedback on transition signage and run course direction is also appreciated and will be addressed with the event team to improve flow and participant guidance. Regarding the run course, we are sorry to hear that sections of the terrain impacted your enjoyment and confidence underfoot. We understand your concerns around safety and footing, particularly in areas affected by uneven ground, and we will review these sections carefully as part of our post-event assessment, including how we communicate course surfaces in advance. We also appreciate your comments on aid station placement and provision in warmer conditions, as well as your suggestions regarding finish-line offerings and goodie bag contents. These are all useful insights and will be shared with the wider team for consideration in future planning. Finally, we’re very pleased to hear that despite some concerns, you felt the event was well organised and enjoyed many aspects of your experience. We’re grateful for your honest and balanced feedback, which helps us continue to improve our events. Thank you again for your time and support, and we hope to see you at another Castle Race Series event in the future.

Feedback of my 2026 Gauntlet race: The logistics of this event were 5/5. Great location, great communication, great support staff. The swim was supposed to be 2k, but in reality was 2.45 (according to my Strava, and those of others). Unclear where this extra half km came from, but there clearly was a problem with the course. Cycle was good - no critisisms. There should have been more aid stations during the run, especially in this heat. Coming off the bike there was no aid station, and the first one wasn't until 4k in. For people who had ran out of water during the cycle, this was long way (again, given the heat). The running course was poor. It was communicated that it was in part a trail, but I had expected at least half of the course to be tarmacked. In reality none of it was. Grass, gravel, forest roads, and many hills (overall elevation was nearly 200m). Unfortunately it caused me to be underprepared for the run. In terms of finish area; a few more food stalls would be nice, especially for spectators who are there all day.

We’re really pleased to hear your positive comments regarding the logistics of the event, including the location, communication, and support from the staff team. It’s great to know these aspects contributed to a positive overall experience for you. We also appreciate your detailed feedback on the swim, cycle, and run courses. Regarding the swim distance, we are sorry to hear your Garmin/Strava recorded a longer distance than expected. We will review the course setup and measurements with the Race Director to ensure accuracy is maintained as closely as possible in future events. Your comments on the run course and aid station placement are also noted. We understand that conditions, particularly in hot weather, can significantly impact athlete experience, and we will review both the number and positioning of aid stations to ensure better support throughout the run. We also appreciate your feedback regarding the terrain of the run course and communication around this. We are sorry that your expectations were not fully aligned with the reality on the day, and we will look at how we can provide clearer descriptions of course surfaces and elevation in future event information. Finally, your suggestion regarding additional food options in the finish area for both athletes and spectators is very helpful and will be shared with the event team for consideration. Thank you again for your constructive feedback, and we hope to welcome you back to another Castle event.

Enjoyable race with a great atmosphere and decent organisation. Support staff were exceptionally good. From getting you set up at transition to everything else. Really appreciated the amount of kayakers and support around the swim. Road wasn't closed to normal road users which was fine but you obviously have to be aware of your surroundings and follow the highway code and all participants were well informed about this ahead of the event. Portaloos are Portaloos and at a busy event they'll never be that clean, but they were fine.

Beautiful venue and great event. The organisation was epic. HMore water stops on run route required possibly . Also a track pump would be handy as a few triathletes needed one. While it was nice to announce age group winners I’m not sure why not all age groups were included. At most races the prizes include all age groupss way up to the oldest entrant.

We were briefed by the race director on swim, bike and run. The swim distance was incorrect . Instead of going 200m I did 400m. This really should not happen especially in a starter triathlon. The bike was ok but there could have been more signage so I knew I was on the correct route. The run was supposed to be 2.5 but it was 1.7. All the above is a real shame as the venue is superb and the staff and marshals are pleasant and friendly. The carvery and drink in Lady Gregory was a nice touch.

Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback following the event. We’re pleased to hear that you enjoyed the venue and found the staff and marshals friendly and welcoming, and that you appreciated the hospitality at Lady Gregory. However, we are very sorry to hear your concerns regarding the swim, bike, and run distances. We understand how important accurate distances are, particularly in a starter triathlon, and we apologise that the swim and run distances did not match what was briefed on the day. Your comments have been noted and will be raised with the Race Director and course team for full review. We also appreciate your feedback regarding bike course signage. Clear navigation is essential for participant confidence and safety, and we will review this to ensure improvements can be made where needed. Thank you again for your honest feedback. We are glad you still enjoyed aspects of the event despite these issues, and we hope to use your comments to improve future editions

My first triathlon, setting up transition was a bit hectic for a first timer but the staff were helpful and no problems. The lake was calm and mild, but they sent us around the 2.5km course instead of 1.9km. Good support coming out of the water. I enjoyed the bike, a very difficult course with a few big hills, there were some stretches where it felt a bit lonely, but the feed stations were in good locations. The run course was deadly, I had trail shoes like recommended but it was 100% a trail run with many hills and uneven ground. Still very enjoyable and good support at the end of the laps. The medal and finisher tshirt were great, and the hot food after (pizza from one of the stalls) was good. Great atmosphere and cool setting for a race, quite a difficult course besides the swim.

Thank you for bringing the swim distance to our attention, this will be mentioned to the race director in our post race briefing.
