Another Lough Cutra swim and the standard of organisation, support and friendliness of the Castle staff is a joy.I found it difficult to navigate the swim but thankfully I ended up with Meghan ( one of the safety kayakers)as my own personal ‘pilot boat. But then I could lose my way in a 15metre long paddle pool so there is no criticism of the way the swim was marked. The water quality was fine and whilst it was in some places quite rough and rocky, if it were all straightforward / easy it wouldn’t be worth doing. Thanks to Brian for another great day

It was my first time taking part in an open water swim, I really enjoyed it and the staff were really nice and friendly! It was a great location and well organised! I felt very safe in the water, it was so much fun and can’t wait to go back again next year. Highly recommend it!

A great location for a race and it was very well organised. My third time doing the swim at cutra and the race marking has improved each time. Use of the buoy 'gates' as markers for turning makes the route very clear.

Thanks so much for the kind words Gill — and for coming back for your third swim at Lough Cutra! We’re really glad you’ve noticed the improvements, especially with the buoy ‘gates’ — clarity on the swim course is so important. Hope to see you back again next year!

Overall a really well organised event. I swam the 5k and given the weather, the decision by the organisers to change the route was the correct one. Contrary to another review, the direction of the route was perfect, as swimmers had a good stretch of swim with wind behind in order to settle into the swim and be well ready for the turn into the head wind. More kayaks spread across the course to direct which way & when to turn would help a lot when sighting is poor/difficult/impossible due to the choppy water . and foggy goggles. The kayakers overall were excellent with attention to swimmer safety and no doubt under-appreciated for levels of observation in that, and for the efforts needed to keep the buoys from flying off with the wind (and themselves in place in the wind)!! No treats left (us swimmers LOVE cake) which was a shame but not a disaster.

Thank you very much for your detailed feedback. We’re delighted to hear that you felt the event was well organised and that you supported the decision to adjust the swim course due to the weather conditions. It’s also great to know you felt the revised route worked well and allowed swimmers to settle into the swim effectively. We really appreciate your comments regarding kayak positioning and course visibility in more challenging conditions. This is very helpful feedback and will be shared with the Race Director and safety team as we continue to review how we can best support navigation in choppy water or low visibility. We’re also very pleased to hear your positive comments about the kayak team and their efforts on the day. They work extremely hard in demanding conditions, and your recognition of their contribution is very much appreciated and will be passed on. And noted on the cake — we completely understand the importance of post-swim treats! Thank you again for taking the time to share your experience, and we hope to welcome you back to another event soon.

First time competing at Lough Cutra. It was a beautiful setting and nice lake to swim in. All markers were clearly visable during the swim and I felt at ease with all the kayak cover. Exit of the swim was quite stoney so watch your footing!! There was a great atmosphere at the finish of the swim. Nice to get a medal and a great spread of treats at the finish line. Will be back next year hopefully completing a triathlon!!

Great location and welcoming staff. Please consider having more pointers for the road diversion, the changing facilities (we couldn't fimd them), the way to the water and the route itself in the water. Also, are first aiders present at the finish?

Thanks so much for your feedback, Michelle! We're glad you enjoyed the location and felt welcomed. We appreciate your suggestions and will work on clearer signage for directions, facilities, and the swim route. And yes, first aiders are present at the finish—thanks for pointing out the need to make that clearer. Hope to see you again soon!

My first castle series swim. I did the 5km. The overall organisation of the course was very good. From directions and stewards to guide was fantastic. Everything was great from easy registration to getting into the water. The medal was great at the end. However, being an experienced swimmer the course was cut down to two laps of the 2.5km and in my opinion due to the wind direction the course should have been reversed. I was very reluctant to go around the second time. There was hardly no food left at the end of the swim for the 5km swimmers. Overall I was happy with organisation of it and a pity the good weather had left us. But unfortunately I don't think I will return due to possibly having the course reversed for safety reasons.

Thank you so much for taking the time to share your experience. We're really glad to hear that you found the organisation, registration, and overall event smooth and enjoyable—and congratulations on completing the 5km! We truly appreciate your feedback regarding the course layout and direction. Your point about the wind and the impact on swimmer safety is a valuable one, and we'll certainly take it into consideration for future planning. We're also sorry to hear there wasn’t enough food left for the later finishers—that’s something we will work to improve. Thank you again for joining us and for your honest input—it really helps us improve.

Thank you so much for your feedback Heloise! We're really glad to hear the pre-race info was clear and that you felt safe and supported during your swim—especially with the last-minute course change. Sorry to hear the post-race refreshments didn’t quite hit the mark; the weather may have played a part, but we’ll look into it. Delighted you liked the medal and amenities, and we hope to see you again next time!

Overall a well organized event, and a great location, and well set up. Getting in is not easy with road closures , and in terms of the swim there needs to be some improvements. The road closures meant when approaching from the North we were rerouted south again on a major diversion to enter the Castle. You should just tell everyone to enter from the Southern route. I am an experienced swimmer and I definitely felt there were not enough eyes in the water for safety. I navigated the start to the 2nd "gate" without issue - mainly because I knew had to pass the island. During that entire time I saw a single kayaker who disappeared after a while. When I got to the 2nd gate to "turn right and swim the to the green marker" there were 2 green markers visible, and no kayaker at that gate to ask which was correct. I went for the wrong one and eventually a kayaker caught up and I had to double back to the correct one. There should be kayakers stationed at each "gate" to ensure swimmers pass them correctly and know where to go then! For the way back - same, until I picked up the line of green buoys towards the end, the island was my marker. We had been told to "keep swimming until you hit the mats" at the finish - this was impossible. There's less than a foot of water for a good way before you hit the mats and you have no choice then but to slow to a crawl or stand up on the stones.
