First time doing an Olympic triathlon and I was really looking forward to taking part in this event.
Having read the other comments, I am in complete agreement with everything that has been said on this thread.
Positives:
- The Vibe on the day
- Swim well laid out (Water quality poor though)
- Medal was ok, not great
Negatives:
-Unbelievably busy
-Lack of knowledgable staff, who all point you to information. Therefore the queue is gigantic
-Cycling course is boring until Westminster, and extremely flat. (not to mention SHORT by a good 5km 👀👀)
- The Run. Crowded, narrow & monotonous.
- The transitions are MENTAL. Taking your wetsuit off, putting in a bag and then queuing to go upstairs is certainly a new experience.
- Putting Elite Athletes last is MENTAL. They catch up immediately and you’ll go to bed at night hearing “RIGHT, RIGHT, RIGHT” as they boom past you.
The worst of all though is if you are in the 10am group (Mass start), they openly mention they close the road to Westminster at between 11am-11:30am, meaning you have to be rapid in the water to have any chance of getting to complete the full cycle.
All in all, a bit of a shambles by a reputable company, and you’re going to bed wondering if that 5km+ short cycle really means you completed an Olympic Tri 😑
