I raced the 70.3 a few years ago and it was great, figured I should do the full also.

It was my 6th full IM race and is on a par with NZ as to my favourite. So much so that I've already signed up for next year.

Busso was all great, really enjoyable race.

Swim is out and back around the jetty in cool water, perfect with a wetsuit.

Bike is a 2 lap course with the right amount of aid stations and loads of friendly volunteers. Road surface is a little rough and that's expected in Australia.

Similarly the run was all good, aid stations on the money and the right amount of support.

Logistics were simple and the crowd support fantastic, the whole town seem proud of their race and gave us a great welcome and support.

This was my 4th Ironman and I must say had the weather been better I am pretty sure it would have been a cracker for everyone.

Overall this race is a flat, fast course on a good day.

This year was a very tough race conditions.

Quick summary:-

Swim is amazing in regards to sighting. You basically swim up the right side of Busselton Jetty for 2km, then cut across the front of it 200m before returning down the lefthand side of the jetty. You can sight the jetty the entire time. This year the water was choppy as hell. I have never been thrown around during a swim in my life. In normal conditions the swim would be amazing. You can also see the bottom of the sea bed the entire time.

Transition is very easy to navigate. Get your bag, go to the tent, change etc. There are volunteers there to help you, if you want the help. They also have water, sunscreen and vaseline in the tents if you require it.

Bike course is beautiful in terms of scenery. You get such a mix of coast riding, then through wooded forest before returning through new developments popping up on either side of the bike course into T2. It does get windy on the course, no doubt about it. There are 5 tight turns that you must complete on each lap. The roads are pretty decent. When the wind is behind you, man you can motor along nicely however when you are hitting head on, expect to be slower, unless you are a freak of rider like Luke McKenzie this year. There are 4 aid stations on each 90km loop. This year one aid station ran out of bananas. They dont serve coke on the bike course either. You have access to you special needs bag on the 2nd lap immediately after completing lap 1.

T2 again is really easy to navigate. Also as you come in to T2 and dismount your bike, the lovely handlers are there to take your bike of you and rack it. Leaving you to simply get your arse to your bag and change in prep for the run.

Run is a 4 lap course, basically along the promenade. It can be lonely if you are slow, like me this year. There is quite a lot of specatators as you come in and out of the race precint, then it thins out a bit. Now this year the weather was a bit yuck. I have heard in previous years there are usually loads of locals set up in their front yards cheering and blasting music. You also have access to your special needs bag 4 times on this run course. You can get cool lap bands. Best ones I have ever received during an Ironman.  The aid stations are pretty much every 2km along the run course. The volunteers are lovely. They have Endura drink, gels, banana, watermelon, vegemite on sticks, lollies in cups, pretzels in cups, water and coke on each aid station.

Overall good fun course, if the weather is kind then you can definitely do a PB on this course.

I am just super pleased to have completed my 4th Ironman after the most inconsistent, injured and sick previous months leading into the race. The power of the mindset is where its at. Your body will do whatever the mind tells it to do. Just remember that!

Thanks

Location: Beauty part of the world, but along way to get there if not an Aussie.

Swim: Around a pier which is about 1.8k long in the bay. No sharks to be seen but always good to stay in the middle of the pack!

Bike: Flat and through some Aussie forests. Road surface is a bit rough, so quite a bit a rolling resistance, but that's just being picky!

Run: Flat and along side the ocean. Can be a bit humid and hot.

A well run and great event, and best place to set your Ironman PB. But not the place to try to qualify for Kona and too many strong Aussies.

Spectaotrs can see the whole swim. The bike is all flat, on closed roads. The winds and heat can be variable. The run has awesome support the whole way up and down along the coast. What really makes this race is the layout and the local community. It is one fo the best for spectators as they can see you several times. The people in Busselton are right behind the race and the atmosphere in the town is really positive and welcoming. The post race and welcome parties are the best I've been to.

A great race in a stunning location, probably the biggest elevation gain on the whole course is the ramp up to the finish line so a great course for a pb. Beware the draconian draft zone of 12 meters and make sure to check out the beautiful margaret river wine region a short drive away. The Fat Duck cyclery is a fantastic bike shop/cafe who do a great unpack/pack and pre race mechanical check service.
