A difficult race to review given the circumstances surrounding the death of an event moto rider and the serious injuries sustained by both a photographer and a participant. The event was what you would expect from an Ironman branded race, a good sense of occasion and smoothly organised but with far too many competitors and incredibly expensive. Swim -- A simple swim course out into the Alter. The water quality wasn't great, but that's to be expected from a city centre body of water I guess. The main problem with the swim was the rolling start, it simply took too long. They were doing 2 athletes every 2 seconds. It should be at least double this to ensure everyone is in the water in a timely manner. In the end, it took them nearly 90minutes to get everyone in the water. Bike -- Not a particularly interesting bike course. The road surface was good and course markings were clear although there was some very tight points with riders going in both directions. Add to that it was a 2 lap course it meant riders were having to overtaking one another constantly and large groups formed where drafting was unavoidable. It all felt a little dangerous and Ironman's insistence on maxing out the number of entries doesn't help, there were simply to many athletes on the bike course at one time. Run -- The highlight of the event for me. A good course, well marshalled with plenty of aid stations evenly spread throughout the course. Again, it did get a little busy due to the number of competitors. The other negative which showed itself here was the attitude of the locals, unfortunately the race felt like an inconvenience to them and not something they enjoyed being in town. There was very little local support for example, which isn't a problem in itself but when locals completely ignore the fact a race is going on it can be frustrating. I saw multiple examples of locals riding bikes, walking dogs, doing their own sunday jog on the course without a single care for the race and sometimes even berating competitors for being in their way.

Finished IM Hamburg last month, my first full Iron distance race. The conditions were almost perfect - sunny swim/bike and cloudy run. Overall registration was efficient as you would expect from IM, and racking etc. On the day a staggered start made things quite relaxed. The lake swim was lovely, perfect. You have to swim through a number of tunnels which could be quite unsettling but overall a great swim. The bike leg is flat. Although don't mistake this as easy. The bike course is very open. On the day we had 12mph winds which don't sound like a lot but were quite tough to cycle against - it was a 2 lap course. Great support on course with crazy Germans using anything they had to hand to make a noise! The run is 4 laps through the city and out by the lake, quite scenic but also takes you through some tiny dusty underpaths. One point to note is that they started to run out of the Maurten non-caffeine gels on some of the aid stations which was very annoying, so I had to grab what I could on the one station that had them remaining so that I was guaranteed a suitable gel on the way round. Not great. Great support throughout and of course the classic IM finish. As the other contributor mentioned, the post race offerings were not great. A hike to another tent to receive your finishers tshirt and street wear bag, and the post race food was massively disappointing - pretzels, gels and coke. EXACTLY the same as all the aid stations. Not great. But overall a great race - especially as your first. I would recommend.

The race itself was excellent, a gorgeous swim in the town centre, a flat bike course (which does give certain challenges as you’re on the bars the whole time) and a flat and well supported run. However, there didn’t appear a lot of thought that went into the pre and post race experience. Basically, I’m annoyed there wasn’t any beer or bratwurst available at the end. You had to walk 800 m to a separate rented area to pick up your tshirt and the food on offer there was very poor, more like a feed station than anything I wanted. Back at the finish line, all the local concessions shut at 9pm and there only place remaining open had a massive queue. The pre race expo was underwhelming and I heard of a couple of bikes being nicked from transition the day before the race. It just felt a bit formulaic. This was my fourth long course and although a good race, it felt the worst athlete experience. It didn’t feel very special. So - overall, a good course, but just missing those little extras.

The course at hamburg is crazy fast. Fast, pan flat silky smooth roads on the 180 km bike course, best place for a bike split PB. My only major complaint about the bike course is there is one short section of cobble stones I had no idea about, so if the course is identical to the 2018 one, make sure all your nutrition is ultra secure to your bike. This shook my hugely as my tyre pressure was very high for the rest of the flat and smooth roads, there was people’s kit all over the place that had been shaken off, I was lucky enough to not lose any kit however. I cannot cancel on the swim as it was cancelled for the 2018 edition due to a blue green algae outbreak in the water due to extremely hot weather leading up the day. It was a freakish 40 degrees C the day I did bike recon about 3 days before race day. However the swim looks stunning on paper and on the walkways surrounding. The run, also fast and excellent, mostly flat and shaded in many areas. Aid stations were excellently stocked with a huge range of nutrition, as well as sponges and ice for the 2018 edition to combat the unusually hot weather. Generally I would highly reccomend this race especially if you’re after a IM PB due to the flat and fast nature of the course.

I only have good things to say about this race. The swim course was great, the bike course was great (and mostly closed roads - something unimaginable in the UK!), the run course was great.

The only negative I can think of was the venue for the race brief. They chose to do it outside which in theory would have been great but the rain made it miserable! I'm sure somewhere can be found for next year.

key for me was how easy it was to get there. I flew in early afternoon on Friday. My hotel was close enough that I could then wander over to register and attend the aforementioned brief. Getting to the start was easy and the post-event stuff was also easy. I flew home afternoon on the Monday. I don't think I'd want to stay longer so this was perfect.

Great race and fantastic support. The combination of the IM brand and sleek German efficiency ensured that this race went smoothly, it felt like it’s 3rd or 4th year of hosting. The race briefing was provided on YouTube as well as in person, the expo, registration, swim start, transition and finishing line were easily accessed by the metro. The swim, bike and run course were unique and the support was fantastic from start to finish, especially for its debut year. This city loves triathlon. I Would defintely recommend this race.

Hamburg as an ironman event & city were awesome.

German efficiency, support friendly support, interesting & scenic courses.

Swim in lake in city centre surrounded by very grand riverside properties. Two laps with an Aussie exit and a rolling swim start - I'm not a fan as you just get swept along with those of same pace so no chance to overtake and same amount of bumping & barging &!knocked off goggles.

Must win a prize for longest transition - 300m run from swim exit to transition then and extra 850m down transition to bike mount.

Bike rode through city, docks, villages, small towns, forrests, up & over amazing bridges and through countryside of vineyards & cornfields. Two laps on the smoothest roads I've ever see, only saw one pothole (twice).

Run was back around the Alster lake through parks and lined by local supporters. Four laps around the lap.

Feed stations were slick with marshals in coloured vest clearly saying what they had - water Coke Fruit ISO By third lap of run we also had beer option  to go with pretzels & salted water !

The finish line was outside the Rathaus and the party was in full flow.

The only downside of the week was the heavy rain on Friday & Saturday so race briefing was a wash out as outdoors so we went to our hotels to watch online as backup.

For a first run event this was a fantastic experience, even with 95%!being German and only 12% women it was a very cosmopolitan event

Would recommend this as a first overseas event or even a first event
