Great event and well marshalled throughout the run and bike courses. Did the 10.5k 45k 4k middle Duathlon and would advise trail shoes although regular running shoes are ok if the course is dry. Chose to race on my TT bike but was glad I swapped the aero disc/deep rim combo for standard rims as the course is too hilly for full aero in my opinion. Plenty of support from locals and Marshalls around the course certainly help when the going gets tough. Would recommend this event for all but maybe advise the use a road bike if your new to Duathlon. Enjoy

Duathlon review: Good: as usual, lovely views, beautiful countryside, varied course, plenty to look at. Enough aid stations Neither good nor bad: The cycle course is very hilly. This is a good thing in the sense that it is challenging and interesting. it's a bad thing in the sense that I'm not sure if I would want to do 90k of it. I did 45k as part of the shorter duathlon and that was enough for me. I would like to do a half ironman tri in the next few years, but I'm not sure if I can handle one as hilly as this. To improve: Portaloos didn't seem to have any water for handwashing, which was also the case at the festival of endurance in 2021 when I did the marathon. So clearly this is a recurring issue. As an aside, you could gain a lot of efficiency by having a urinal for men, meaning many men wouldn't need to use a cubical portaloo. Overall: if you are considering an event at hever and haven't done one yet, you should definitely try it out, as it really is a very beautiful part of the world and the hilly nature of the course does add a certain je ne sais quoi. PS: I suspect there is a good reason as to why you don't, but I would love it if you added a standard/olympic tri to the festival of endurance (even if it means cycling on the 45k route, making it slightly longer than an official olympic. I think it would be popular if you did).

The scenery is breathtaking but it is not a course for the faint hearted. It’s highly challenging especially the first part of the cycle route which is predominantly uphill after doing a hilly trail half marathon! Having said that completing it makes it all the more of an achievement. Because the duathlon was one of the last to start and as I was doing the long distance, I did the event practically on my own. I passed five other cyclists during my 90k ride. I have done the gauntlet here a couple of times and this was definitely harder, but there were a lot more cyclists on the route with me which gave it more of an event feel than a personal challenge. I found the road marshals really helpful in letting me know if the road was clear and the running ones cheered me on at what must have been the tail end of their long day so thank you to all of them!

I was due to do the Gauntlet but had to pull out due to an eye injury. The team switched me over to the Duathlon the morning of the race, no issues at all. The Duathlon was well signposted and an interesting route...if challenging. That last hill on the run is a proper kicker! Well organised, fun event. Really enjoyed it. Only slight negative, cost of the Guantlet. It was a lot of money.

The run-to-bike transition on gravel was a little sketchy!

Well organised event. Some nice scenery. I've done a few duathlons/triathlons and would call myself an intermediate. The Run sections were nice, undulating hills but lots of stations and clearly marked route. Some of the distance markers were wrong which threw me slightly (5km marker where the 6km was) but no real complaints. The bike ride is the hardest 40km I've ever done and wasn't expecting. I'm used to Cotswold hills and this was a whole other ball game. Slow long ascents with sharp drops to get your adrenaline pumping. It's on open roads but busy junctions were marshalled. Definitely not one for a personal best but if you are after a challenge and wanted to try something before doubling your distance this is the event to do. For reference I would of expected to do this distance close to 3hours, and ended up taking 4, and almost all the additional time was the bike.
