A lovely course, excellent city and great atmosphere. I would love to race this again! Very straight forward entry into starting area. Extremely flat course. Very wide. Not too much congestion. Only in the first few km. NOT ENOUGH TOILETS! There is a lot of aid stations and with a-lot of Gatorade so be prepared for that beforehand! Finish was fine, straight forward to walk through. Medal is good Hope to be back

Fast, flat and s great atmosphere, but boy, these early starts! Sadly I suffered with a sore heel after 18 miles and if I’m brutally honest, the baggage claim was an absolute nightmare but major 5 of 6 is a great achievement

Didn’t like spectators running across the road while I’m running. Nobarriers. Not good

Just a fantastic race and I'd do it again given the chance. As with other majors, it's a 'bucket list' event for many and it certainly lives up to its reputation.

The pre-race organisation (registration, emails, expo) are all superb. I'd recommend doing the 5K event before the day, to sample the city atmosphere and acclimatise to the windy corridors between some of the buidings! It was an early start on the day, and the bag drop was quite a crowded affair (my only real gripe...before and after). There was plenty of water and free gels on offer for those that needed them.

The views of the city are outstanding on the route and the crowd support is tremendous almost every mile of the way. The aid stations were frequent and the marshals did a great job, and the medal and t-shirt provided at the end are nice too. All in all, a great experience.

I was honoured to be invited to join the official pace team for the 2019 Chicago marathon and was asked to lead one of the sub 4hr30 groups alongside Suman who I had paced with at London this year.

This event is amazing, it is one of the World marathon majors and it lived up to all expectations.

The marathon expo is held on Friday and Saturday to collect your number and necessary kit ahead of an early 7.30am race start on Sunday.

Logistics are very simple with the start and finish being very close together in Millenium and Grant Parks in the centre of Chicago, a short walk from all of the central hotels. The route takes in huge parts of the city and crosses through over 20 different boroughs, the weather was cold but dry and meant there was an excellent support on the course. Just one or two slightly quieter areas. Aid stations were very frequent with a mixture of drinks available.

The finishers medal is beautiful and the technical ‘competitor’ t-shirt from Nike is high quality.

We had a great group running with us with many of them staying with us right through to the final mile before we sent them on ahead for a strong finish. I crossed the finish line in 4hrs 29 and 42 seconds which I was very happy with, lots of high fives, pictures and happy runners at the end.

Overall, I would definitely recommend this race to anyone who enjoys major city races. Yes it was busy in places but the very wide open roads meant no hold ups on the course. The city of Chicago was lovely to run through amongst the modern sky scrapers and the variety of boroughs and parks. The organisation and logistics were superb. I hope to run this race again in the future and highly recommend it.

Wow! What a weekend and what a fantastic race. This was my third major and second in two weeks. It was also my favourite by a long way!  Firstly, Chicago is an incredible city. The people (Mid-Westerns’ are a lot more laid back than New Yorkers who have that London unfriendliness about them), the back drop of the city by the lake and rivers and the epic archicture all make for a diverse, friendly and stunning city.

I went to the expo on the Friday via a free shuttle bus from the Nike store on Michigan Avenue. These expo’s are all the same in terms of brands flogging their stuff and I’m proud to say I only parted with $12! I do like the atmosphere and pre-race buzz though. No queues and slick organisation made for a nice and speedy experience though.

Race day couldn’t come soon enough for me. I’d recovered well from Berlin marathon two weeks earlier and wanted to better my time of 3:07 and hopefully get a Boston qualifier.
This race isn’t cheap, over $200 if I recall rightly. But then it is a world major. The organisation and communication is brilliant and with over 12,000 volunteers, you’re well looked after. It’s a very early start though, race itself starts at 7:30am. with security and bag-drop, I made sure I arrived for 6am. This was plenty of time and I didn’t experience any long line ups which others had. I made my way to corral B in leaisurely fashion and felt relaxed and ready! Make sure to wear throw away warm clothes as it’s freezing at that time of day. I had a hoody and sweat pants which I chucked on the charity pile just before the start.
After a rousing rendition of the National Anthem, we were away! The whole route is well lined with raucous spectators making plenty of noise. This was great and so encouraging. Running through the city and the different neighbourhoods was brilliant. I found it a really interesting route and the support really does carry you along. Aid stations were every mile and had a mix of water or Gatorade. The last few stations had fruit. I made sure to take on plenty of water, a mistake from Berlin corrected.
GPS isn’t good in the city due to tunnels and the sky-scrapers. I relied on the old fashioned way of mile markers and splits written on my arm for pacing. Surprisingly, I ran one of the tightest splits I’ve done, every 5k was just one or two seconds apart.
With the crowd support I was feeling great and really strong all the way, pacing and fuel was spot on and I finished the race feeling brilliant and getting the BQ and a PB in 3:03:29. I was over the moon! It was the perfect race and my best marathon experience to date.
At the finish line, we were presented with our quality medal, fruit, protein bars, water and beer! The atmosphere was electric in the mid-morning sun.
The only slight gripe was the long line up to retrieve my bag with warm clothes! Fortunately it was sunny but it was cold and people were starting feel the effects. Once I retrieved my bag, I went to the after-race area and enjoyed another beer, listened to the music and took in the atmosphere, which was like a party. That night we went out to celebrate as he city was flooded with Marathon finishers. This was a phenomenal trip and a great race. If you ever get the chance to do it, don’t worry about the cost, do all you can to experience it and you’ll have memories that last a lifetime!

Well what can I say about Chicago?? UNBELIEVABLE, ELECTRIC, BREATHTAKING, AMAZING, UTTERLY BRILLIANT!! I’m never normally lost for words but blimey, what an amazing marathon, definitely THE best marathon I’ve ever run, not my fastest but definitely the best in terms of uniqueness.

Talk about support every step of the way, it didn’t quieten and it certainly didn’t fail in
terms of helping you get round, the support was second to none, not many marathons have support every mike of it but this certainly did.

The route itself was brilliant, you run though like 13 different neighbourhoods I think it was, each supporting in their own unique way, a very flat fast very scenic route, I know it’s a ballot entry and that’s what makes it so much more special to run it.

I would definitely recommend this marathon to anyone, in fact, every marathoner should run Chicago at least once in their running lives.

T-shirt medal and goody bag were lovely!

I’m over the moon to have run this to the point I wish I could do it all over again.

🏃🏻‍♀️🇺🇸🏅

what a day.
Another early start, 5:30am meet up, does get very busy very quickly.
baggage drop was the worst I have ever experienced, no sticky label on bags just a number you thread onto the strap then they put bags in boxes and you then have to wait ages to collect once finished, the worst part from me. Wouldn't be so bad if it wasn't in the Windy City.
the race started on time, but was cold so glad I bought spare joggers and hoodie to discard.
The race was a really flat route apart from the mountain climb before the finish, did not need that!
plenty of aid stations every couple of miles.  Best I have experienced so far.
the crowds were awesome, not as good as London but I'm sure the cold weather put everyone off.
I really enjoyed the race, some great sights, loverly people
loverly beer after a can of 26.2, only gripe is that the can was opened for you, I wanted to take mine home!

happy as hell with my time of 2:59

The race village after was fab, free massage that was great just what I needed.

live music being belted out, more free beer if you wanted, a really well organised after party
highly recommend you run this race  it is a memory I will never forget

  Thank you Chicago 🇺🇸 🖤💚 #visorhair #visorontour

This was my first marathon and what an experience it was. First of all, to get the negatives out of the way. The organisation at gate 2 wasn't very good, it was too congested and it meant I was nearly kate getting to the start line. I was queuing for nearly an hour to get through and other probably longer. Once at the start the line, the magic started. 26.2 miles of enjoyment as I wonder through the streets of Chicago, boosted by the incredible on course support. There was stops at about every 2km for drinks and there was plenty of water and Gatorade to keep us going. The course itself follows the streets of Chicago with a few residential areas thrown in. Overall a enjoyable course to run, very flat too. My only advice to anyone running it next year is to keep to the right hand side when approaching a bridge. The carpets were laid on that side with the left just a grid. It was difficult to run on but I soon learnt my lesson. The picture were good but I did expect more photographers. Perhaps it was the rain! Overall, I wouldn't hesitate to do the event again, it was an amazing experience!

This is one of those races that will already be on the "To do" list for anyone with the ambition to run the world majors. Even if that's not your goal is a race worthwhile considering. When I ran this it was a day of constant drizzle, which eventually became a heavy downpour. Sounds miserable for 42km doesn't it? Well, the support of the locals was incredible despite the conditions, and I'd have to say it was better supported than the London Marathon. The organisation is good, it didn't feel overcrowded at any point and it was a nice way to see the city, one mile at a time.
