Extremely disappointed I entered the race as part of a rehabilitation programme supporting my son who was racing. On the second lap I was told by a marshall that I was a hazard to everyone as I was swimming backstroke most of the time and this was not allowed I tried to explain that I would be more of a hazard to everyone if my leg mussels twist when swimming in only one axis for long periods. I had no option but to get out. Why was it not stipulated that backstroke was not allowed at the he event as I would not have attended I feel completely robbed of not only the fee but the months of training for the event and the feeling now that I'm excluded from future events

Really enjoyed the swim, despite the small lap size, although was put off doing a longer distance here by the number of laps. Having said that, the small lap size does make this a particularly approachable swim for spectators which is nice. As always the information provided ahead of time and on the day was clear and helpful. All the staff and volunteers o the day were friendly, helpful and professional, as I've come to expect from Castle Race Series events! Only downside was that rather than walking us down to the start at 10:40 as advertised, the guide from bag drop left at 10:25 so I wasn't ready, rushed to get ready and then still had to find my own way down (particularly challenging given my glasses were in bag drop!), all to discover there was still plenty of time when I reached the lake but I was now flustered and anxious, which isn't a great way to start a race.

Thank you for your thoughtful review and for your continued support of the Castle Race Series! We're delighted to hear you enjoyed the swim and that you found the pre-event information, as well as our staff and volunteers, clear, friendly and helpful. We really appreciate your feedback about the walk to the swim start. We're sorry this didn't happen as communicated and that it left you feeling rushed and anxious before your race. That's certainly not the experience we want our participants to have, and we'll review this with the team to make sure timings and communication are clearer in future. Thank you again for taking the time to share your experience. We hope to welcome you back for another swim soon.

The event was very well organised as usual, but I did find the gathering of swimmers adjacent to the bag drop before the long walk to the safety briefing was confusing!!

Not as much emphasis on people doing the swim, no MC around when people were finished and I had to get my own medal from the snack table so it was a bit deflating. But the staff in the lake were great, encouraging and supportive.

While the volunteers were an absolute saving grace, incredibly friendly and supportive, and the medal itself was good quality, the 2026 event unfortunately fell short of expectations due to several logistical and course issues. The bag drop was located frustratingly far from the lake, which itself was quite murky and plagued by an awful petrol smell at the furthest point of the course. A 500m loop made the 5k feel dull and repetitive, and having to shout out your race number after each lap was highly challenging and left me uncertain if it was even recorded, especially when other participants skipped doing so. Furthermore, the bag check-out lacked proper security as I was able to retrieve my bag completely unchallenged, and it was disappointing that the medal only named other sites without any mention of the specific event I actually completed.

Brilliant event! I did the 2.5k today (18th July 2026). It was my first open water event (and actually only my 4th time swimming in open water). My plan was not to race but just to take it easy and do the distance. It was well organised, safe, the other swimmers were very respectful of distance and the kayak people were great at making sure we didn’t veer off course. Water was 21degree so I did no wetsuit but could have done either. The water was good quality and a Great Lake. I’m super chuffed I did this as my first event as it was ideal!

I always enjoy the Castle Series events, though this was the first time I did a swim only. The course was better than I thought it would be from the map, and not as crowded as I feared. There are a wide range of swimmers both in terms of experience and ability so some inclusion of what to expect in an open water swim event might help. As the water was so murky it was easy to be right on top of someone without realising it. I still have a bruise a week afterwards, when a swimmer got so annoyed with me being next to him he elbowed me hard in the chest. Organisation was generally good, though I was not expecting to be called to go to the swim start at the same time as the 5km swimmers, led to me rushing to the start only to then hang around for 20mins.

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience, and we’re really pleased to hear you enjoyed your first swim-only event with the Castle Series! We appreciate your comments about the swim course—it’s great to know it exceeded expectations on the day. Your feedback on the range of swimmers and the challenges of navigating in murky water is really helpful. We'll certainly look at how we can better communicate what to expect in open water conditions, especially for those newer to this type of event. We're sorry to hear about the incident during your swim—that sounds unpleasant and certainly not in the spirit of the event. While these situations are rare, we take them seriously and are always looking at ways to support a safe and respectful environment for all competitors. Thanks also for flagging the confusion at the swim start. We’ll review our pre-race announcements and timings to make sure they’re clearer and help avoid unnecessary stress before the race. We really value your input and hope to welcome you back at another Castle Series event soon—perhaps even for a full triathlon next time!

I've done better and I've done worse, this is pretty average in terms of course, quality and support but is very expensive compared to many others so falls down in terms of value for money. I was in the mile swim which was £45 entry + admin fee + my partner had to pay £8 to watch me from a distance that they couldn't see anyway. To spend around £55 + petrol etc is definitely at the higher end of any swims I take part in (and I do a lot!), probably only surpassed by the Great Swim Series. For that, I was expecting some decent swag but no! The medals were generic. I came in the top three so won a 'prize' which was actually just a load of leaflets advertising sponsors, the only useful thing inside my winning envelope was a coffee bag!!! Most competitions give their winners a t-shirt or a nice trophy! I agree with the other comments that having multiple waves in the water at the same time makes things very difficult ... personally I'm used to just swimming round or over people, but I always feel bad for those who are less confident in the water and going slowly, as they get people like me trying to race past them which probably impacts on their enjoyment. Probably far better to give the mile swim a 30min head start or ask for projected times to be able to seed people. So many people in the water makes it hard to sight too, especially when the buoys are the same colour as some hats. On a small W-shaped course like this it was very difficult to see and get into your stride, it felt like a constant battle. The weather was sadly awful which we can't do much about but nevertheless needs preparing for. Castle Howard was similar a year or two ago. The parking is a long way from the event village, which is a long way from the swim venue. Its not ideal carrying heavy bags back and forth when you're trying to conserve energy for a race. We also had a pram, and the venue was very much not-friendly to this situation, trying to get it down a long muddy rocky incline and the spectator area around the lake was small and inaccessible. I also always get the feeling that the triathlons are the main event and every other sport is a bit of an afterthought, so as a pure swimmer, I always feel like I'm being fitted around triathlete's needs rather than us being considered independently.

Thank you for your detailed feedback — we really appreciate the time you took to share your experience. We're sorry to hear that aspects of the event didn’t meet your expectations, especially regarding value for money, swim logistics, and spectator access. Your points about wave management, visibility, and prize structure are all noted and will be shared with the team as we work to improve future events. We’re grateful for your participation and hope we can deliver a better experience next time.

This was my first ever outdoor swim race so I do not have much to compare it to but I thought the communication and guidance for the swim was well done. I felt confident I knew the route and what I had to do. The water was very weedy but I understand that is not under the organizer's control. It did get very crowded in the water at times, I think it would be better to spread out the swim groups a little more so everyone is not in the water at the same time. The medal and feed station at the end was a nice touch. I generally enjoyed the race and would sign up again!

Yet Another great event from Castle in yet another stunning location. The water quality was fine and the temperature maybe a little too warm (for me ) a bit weedy but no more than expected in an open water event. Post swim great music and good food and despite the rain we managed to keep warm and dry in the tents and enjoy a family reunion. The only criticism has nothing to do with the organisation but with the swimmers themselves. There is a growing tendency these days to be overly aggressive in swimming events. I was swum over by a number of testosterone fuelled macho men ( and women!) who seem to believe that if you thrash your arms about wildly other swimmers are obliged to get out of your way. Good stroke technique and spotting are clearly not part of their make up/experience This is a great shame, the lake is big enough to allow such swimmers to pass lesser mortals as me safely with no real detriment to their all important time or place. It is only common decency, respect, and good manners after all. The ultimate if such is allowed to continue is that us lesser mortals will get so discouraged that they will not enter any more and consequently the entry fee for these super heroe types will double That would be a great pity for us all

Thank you for your thoughtful feedback and for highlighting both the positives and the challenges of the swim. We’re sorry to hear about the aggressive behaviour in the water — respect and safety are top priorities, and we’ll continue to reinforce this message with all participants. We’re glad you enjoyed the location, music, and family atmosphere despite the rain, and appreciate your support of the Castle Series.
