The Bedford 20 Mile race was one of the best organised running events I've attended (I've attended hundreds of events). From start to finish, everything ran incredibly smoothly and created a really positive experience for runners.
Parking was plentiful and conveniently located close to the event village. Race registration and bib collection were quick and efficient, thanks to the excellent staffing levels, and there were plenty of toilet facilities available without the long queues that are often seen at events like this.
The atmosphere throughout the morning was fantastic. It felt like a real running festival, with everyone in great spirits and excited to be there. The event had a welcoming and supportive feel from the moment I arrived and finished with great music and a very chilled vibe.
The marshals deserve particular praise. They were enthusiastic, encouraging, and constantly cheering runners on around the course. It was also reassuring to see them checking on runners who appeared to be struggling, while paramedics were visible and attending to those who needed assistance. This created a real sense of safety throughout the event.
What stood out most was the willingness of the volunteers and marshals to go above and beyond. At one point I stopped at a water station to refill my bottle so that I could mix an electrolyte tablet. A marshal noticed I was trying to do this using cups of water and immediately came over with a large jerry can container to help me fill it much more quickly. It was a small gesture, but one that made a big difference and was greatly appreciated.
On another occasion, after taking a cup of water, a marshal actually ran alongside me to hand over a second cup and then took the used cup from me rather than having me throw it on the ground. That level of thoughtfulness and runner-focused support really summed up the event as a whole.
I also appreciated the availability of toilets along the course, especially as I needed to make a stop during the race.
I also love the free photographs offered as opposed to having to spend a huge amount of money to buy them seperately.
If I were to suggest any improvements, I would have liked to see a few more water stations across the route, and it would have been helpful to know in advance which brand of gels would be provided. Being able to practise with the race-day nutrition beforehand would have given runners confidence that it agreed with their stomachs. However, these are very minor criticisms in what was otherwise an excellent event.
Overall, the Bedford 20 Mile was a superbly organised race with a fantastic atmosphere, outstanding volunteers, and excellent support for runners and great value for money. I thoroughly enjoyed the experience and would highly recommend it to anyone looking for a quality pre-marathon event. I'll definitely be back.
