Having attended the Rye Summer Series race twice this year there were a number of things that disappointed me and I feel the need for others considering this race in the future may need to know. I was due to run this race but due to injury I was a spectator and cheer leader for my son who has raced this twice this year. Firstly the start and finish is on the harbour, beautiful spot when the sun is shining, with very good facilities, however after attending the event in August there was a large van parked, the driver decided to move his van whilst the race was happening, the marshals were there however it became very dangerous as the runners turned a blind corner when the van was reversing, fortunately nothing serious happened but I feel this could have been managed far better for the safety of the runners who were coming in at some speed. Secondly as the runners were arriving back and then leaving there was no marshalling being done for them to leave in a particular or safe way, they could walk over the bridge which meant the runners still on the course could have potentially collided with them, this also included vehicles were allowed to leave and drive over the narrow bridge which meant that participating runners had to swerve them. Finally it was witnessed that whilst the event was still happening and the slower runners were still returning the awards ceremony was taking place, being a slower runner myself I felt this was very inconsiderate and it was the case if was wasn’t quick then who cares about you. Even the race director wasn’t acknowledging the slower runners that were coming in. At the end of the day no matter your time everyone pays the same price and sometimes the slower runners deserve more recognition. I won’t be participating in this race again, it seems poorly managed, only those that are fast are acknowledged and the safety on the start/end of the course was dangerous. There are far better and organised races out there that are worth the money!!

Hello Natasha, Thank you for your honest and open comments and I DO mean this. It's your Race Director Mark here and I wanted to reply to some of your comments and open the door for further discussion to put your mind at ease. Starting with the awards - I agree it would be lovely to do when everyone is back but logistically this is not possible - particularly when you add the fact that the 5km podium winners would have been waiting almost an hour for this. It is a balance and I was doing all I could to let them know when they would be announced, and continually manage the race. Some of them actually had to leave before the announcements (which is something I offered to them so they could take their trophies) so you can see how hard it is to get this spot on. It may have been this that created the impression that slower runners are less cared for and this is certainly not the case. At the heart of what we do, is that all are important regardless of ability. I certainly did acknowledge any runner whom I saw, regardless of their finishing time, though not as much as I would have liked to have done as it was a very busy evening and there were lots of duties to do. There was a very experienced marshal at the bridge but this evening the village was very busy and so she was helping colleagues by the road junction as some runners were heading for home meaning that the area was busy with both runners and vehicles. We have a very loyal and faithful set of volunteers for this race and they know the route and it's challenges well. Without our regulars, we may not be able to host the race as volunteers can be a challenge occasionally to recruit. Regarding the van, I spoke with the driver and together with the England Athletics Race Adjudicator in attendance, we guided the vehicle over to load up the jetski. We get to host races in some lovely locations and this does mean too that non-runners like to use the facilities. We have permission to use the location but not overall control over access but we work with the public (the van driver was very considerate) and this is mentioned in my race briefing that we share the facility. I hope this explanation comes over in the intended spirit and please drop us an email if you would like to discuss this further. I am concerned that you have the wrong impression of a number of things and would welcome the opportunity to have a chat and discuss this so your worries can be put at ease. Kind wishes, Mark

I only began running in January and booked the Rye 5k to motivate myself. It's the first organised race I've ever done. From the minute I arrived, pre-race nerves were calmed by the staff and everything felt very well organised. During the race, I was blown away by the encouragement, not only from the race marshalls, but from other runners. The atmosphere was really supportive and I will be booking again.
