Welwyn Half Marathon was the perfect race for me: - a challenging but not too challenging course ✅ - opportunity to practice marathon race pace ✅ - great track finish, exactly the same as my upcoming marathon in Abingdon ✅ The icing on the cake was a surprise age category win, a 9th place finish and brilliant photos from Mark J Easton. Thank you ATW. There were a few tight turns/corners at times which were a bit tricky - but mentally it gave me a boost to know I managed them while still hitting my target pace 👍🏼

The course is not great. At times the pavement is so narrow (and dangerously uneven) that many runners decided to take the road instead (open to traffic). A marshall sent a few dozen runners to the wrong direction causing them to finish the race with a deficit of about a mile.

Really disappointed to find that we were send to wrong direction by marshals which resulted one KM less in half marathon 😖😖😖

Hi Micheal, Thank you for taking the time to leave us a review. We can confirm that our marshals are briefed before every event and given clear instructions as to what is expected of them. Our MD was made aware of the situation at Welwyn. It is never our intention to disappoint our participants and as you have stated, you have previously had good experiences with us. This was human error and it was corrected as soon as possible. Our events team are having a meeting to review this incident. As you have previously had good experiences with us, we do hope you will join us again.

I may write a separate note but, sorry, here we go: * I was surprised to see a wave of runners coming towards me just after my mile five. They had obviously missed the right turn shortly after the turn point and thus would not have gone to the second water station and a chunk of the course. A marshal actually at this critical turn would have been useful. Do you know this happened? How did you account for it in the results. * The course as far too narrow in places. For large sections the event was effectively neutralised with me unable to overtake anyone and no-one able to overtake me. * One example a sharp left turn from a reasonably wide cycleway and footpath onto a very narrow path alongside a busy road. The corner was so congested that I was unexpectedly pushed onto into the road to avoid a pole and could not get back due to numbers and an awkward bank until the next entrance. Coming back the only way to be 100% confident of not wobbling into the road was by having my right arm dragging through the bushes. * Second example running through a field we had to stop to queue at three little bridges. * 1,001 trip hazards. Not just in the extensive off road sections but all those kerbs and those uneven Welwyn Garden City pavements (and low flying trees). * No marshals at some junctions with traffic. * Several unresponsive marshals. For example not clearly indicating some unexpected turns and not being in the obvious place to show traffic there was an event. * In some places the pavements did not join up leaving runners to make some tricky choices. * Unnecessary steps. An unexpected challenge for participants with access challenges. * The pacer for 2:15 was great, chatty, patient. However with the hold ups and hazards for runners it became a crazy form of interval training e.g. see the flag disappear at the first bridge; chase; see the flag disappear at the second bridge; chase; see the flag disappear at the third bridge; chase; and so on. Partly to avoid that and partly to be able to see some of the hazards rather than people's feet I eventually opted to run in front of the flag. * The option of some kind of energy drink at the water stations would have been good. * I did this event a while ago. There were changing facilities and refreshments indoors. We were not sent across that grassy field with the little bridges. This time it was starting to rain at the finish. No incentive to hang around and chat. The plus was it was a reasonably local 13 miles training run on a day that suited.

I’ve previously had good experiences with ATW events, but the Welwyn Half 28/09/25) was extremely disappointing. A marshal sent a large group of runners the wrong way, leaving us over a kilometre short of the correct distance. This cost many people including members including myself and I’ve been made aware members of Bedford Harriers using the race for their club championship—personal bests, age-group awards, and accurate results. ATW have offered a free race entry, but there has been no proper explanation of how such a basic error occurred or what measures will be put in place to prevent it happening again. A complimentary entry does not address the loss of results or the integrity of the competition. ATW normally run excellent events, but this incident highlighted serious shortcomings in course management and communication that must be fixed before future races.

The main areas of the event were well looked after and good facilities. Out on the course the Marshalls didn’t seem interested and were mostly on their phones. Most hardly looked up as we went by and we had to keep asking for directions. The front group got sent the wrong way making the route short for a half marathon. Some marshals started to leave their station and we had to say there were quite a few runners behind us. Very poor show.

Hi Venessa, Thank you for taking the time to leave us a review. The events team are reviewing the marshals from this event, as this is not the experience we expect our participants to receive. We are glad to hear that you thought the main areas of the event were good and we do hope to see you at another ATW event soon.

Great race! The biggest area of improvement is the pacers! The 1:45 pacer did not start the race at the right pace meaning myself and others were unable to keep up. He paid the price by mile 12 as I overtook him walking - I finished at 1:50 so he definitely didn’t get his pacing right as I finished before him! An extra Marshall or rethought is needed at the end where you enter the sports park. There is too much congestion and the small pathway is too narrow and slows runners down for that sprint finish.
